Hi all,

I new here, well sort of. I''ve been reading a lot of posts and learned a lot in the past year and something, using much of what I read as reference to buy an engagement ring. I proposed last year (May 16th) and I thank you for all your info.

What brings me here today (and finally registering) is this, since that time reading and learning and finally buying with full confidence in my ability to pick out something grand (in my eyes and hers at least) I have become very interested in the business. I''ve read some past articles on how to get into the business but I still come away wondering how much that actually applies to me.

So I come with this, I''m 29, in Canada and have a contact in China that will supply me with diamonds. But from my amateur knowledge and experience, I wouldn''t know what to do with them. Do I stand a chance?

First I guess, am I to old to get into the business. As from some reading on this board, it takes many years of study and then mentoring before able to do this well enough to make a business out of it.

Secondly, is importing diamonds a good business as I wouldn''t know who to sell it to. I would like to start off small and do this as a hobby business, not really looking to make a living off of it. But eventually maybe I would.

I would appreciate any advice or comments anyone would have.

Thanks,
Mike

I would say that you need to find a job in the diamond business for a couple years. Learn what you can, and see what it is really like. Get your GIA studies done and then decide if this is what you really want to do.

It is not an easy business and the margins can be fairly small. The first problem you have right now is you don't know if your contact in China is pricing the diamonds at a true wholesale price for what they are, or if you're paying way too much.

With this said, you need to get into the field for a while and learn watching someone that knows and is spending their money.

Best of luck!
