I have been searching and searching and I think I am now a victim of too much information.
I have seen some beautiful stones and some not so beautiful stones but I feel that comparing beautiful stones
is like deciding on a 67 lincoln continental convertible, a 1970 challenger, or 67 shelby mustang.

I live in Los Angeles and have a large selection of diamonds to look at from dealers of uncertified stones in Chinatown, the jewelry booths on Hill St., to the private diamond dealers in the high rises on Hill.

I bring an ASET, an idealscope, a UV pen light, and a camera everywhere I go and sometimes I get nasty looks but mostly inquisitive dealers, and the occasional dealer who is just as enthusiastic as I am.

I really love my girlfriend, can't call her fiancee yet, and I know she wants a:
2+ carat
patterned cut (AGS ideal, GIA excellent, 8 arrows)
G-H color at lowest
eye clean stone
and I have a $20-24k budget (which I think makes it really hard, like one of those reality show guys who finds an old, original pain, Bugatti with 500 miles on the odometer sitting in some barn in the middle of no where) but I am intent on weeding out the special stone amongst all the triple X, or AGS 0-1 stones.
t
I have read and seen most of the tutorials on goodoldgold.com and pricescope and really appreciate the information. Today I met with a guy who cuts the Eighternity stone and was also impressed. I think ultimately, I want to find the perfect stone for my fiancee but also to establish a relationship with a jeweler so that I can always turn back to a trusted friend to buy more diamonds.

Sorry for the long post, I just really need help finding a stone, I'm at my wit's ends. I need it by February 13-18th sometime because I was planning to propose during our engagement shoot which will be at the elementary school where we met.

Here are some questions:

1) On GIA excellent cut stones, is the pale pink under the table and pale pink around the upper girdle facets a bad sign, meaning if I keep looking, will I find a GIA excellent cut stone with more red to the edge and a table with more light return? Here are some examples of what I mean:
gia%202.01%20XXX%20g%20VS2.jpg

2) I was told honestly by a dealer that he buys diamonds that are ungraded and decides where to send his stones for certification after in house grading and determining that a beautiful stone can get a GIA bump (like Colbert bump) and a stone that would be hurt by GIA gets sent to EGL-USA to get an on paper edge. And in fact, I was sitting with a diamond cutter when another dealer asked him to help grade a stone, something like J color 3ct who had a diamond from a shopper unhappy with her retail purchase who was asking for more than that price. When the cutter agreed with the dealer that it was a lower color, she pulled an EGL-Intnl cert that graded the diamond an H color, so I know that GIA and AGS are the more conservative grading houses, but the question is, can I find a diamond in the rough that is eye clean (VS1-2) EGL-USA, F-G color, that would be GIA SI-1-2, G color but the cut turned out to be a true ideal cut AGS 0-1, or GIA XXX? Or is that a pipe dream?
This is a EGL-USA, 2ct, VS1, G color for $24k mounted + tax, ideal cut:

3) I have access to rapnet.com and the prices look pretty good, is that a good place to get a deal on a diamond?

4) Finally, with it coming to crunch time, am I really being just too picky, and am I only imagining a difference where there isn't one discernable to the human eye? Going from stone to stone, I can remember the little nuances I liked about the stone, like a dark star pattern, or a bright star pattern because of the lower girdle facet lengths, or a nice spread, but I really haven't been able to compare as many side by side. That's why I take the pictures, but at this point, it has become very confusing.

5) I saw my first supra-faceted ideal cut stone, the eighternity and was impressed by its light return but a little turned off by its loss of the traditional pattern, I have seen the videos on goodoldgold, but in person, in diffuse lighting, it looks like the eighternity had much more brilliance and scintillation compared with the GIA XXX with 8 arrows. I know it's a matter of personal preference, but the question is, if my girlfriend wanted to upgrade, would I lose value on the open market because of the uniqueness of the cut?

I'm really sorry about the long post, but you all have helped me so much, and I'm just asking for one last favor, help me find the perfect diamond for my fiancee, please.

My girlfriend has a good eye for color, and I dont
how noticeable is a GIA G vs H
I know an EGL-USA H is noticeable

Re: Getting Married March 31st 2012 - still need engagement

Light pink is ok.

Why don't you just look for an eye-clean SI2/I1 to start with? Your budget is great for what you want, you could probably get away with it under 20K.

I don't think you would lose value on the open market so long as it is a round.

Re: Getting Married March 31st 2012 - still need engagement

If your considering EGL because you are think that you are going to get more diamond for your money, you won't. There could be a significant difference between a GIA H and an EGL H, and you mentioned that your gf is color sensitive so I douby that the H on a an EGL cert is going to convince her.

People ask your question all the time, or what I assume is your question....can you get a comparable EGL stone for less money than a GIA...and the quick answer is no. You will end up spending more money on the EGL. You had a jewler tell you that he pre grades the stones and sends them to the corresponding lab so that they don't get 'bumped' on paper...they ALL do this, and they do it because it makes them MORE money. I'm actually surprised by his honesty with you.

You would get more value dropping down a color and or clarity grade and staying with an AGS GIA certed stone. I think at this point I would stay away from anything uncerted too, in the interest of time and having to have each stone evaluated by an independent appraiser to confirm stats and the relative cost of having to do so.

It is absolutely a pipe dream to think you could find an F-G EGL stone that would grade to a G in GIA. F-G in EGL is going to be H at best and likely I-J-K in reality. You get what you pay for, so you may as well look at GIA graded stones. The idealscopes on the stones above are fine, though, they don't have to be perfect to look excellent. I do think maybe you need to have a little talk with your girlfriend about current diamond prices and the fact that diamonds are crazy expensive right now and there's no way to get a GIA G SI1 ideal cut stone for $20k. Try closer to $30k. Sad but true. You can do a lot better if you go under 2 cts. But she needs to know where she wants to sacrifice. You can save some money by getting a stone with fluorescence and that is a bonus as far as I am concerned.

Okay, this is a virtual stone and can likely be called in by any vendor. It is a 2.09 H VS2 with strong blue fluorescence. You need someone to call it in for you who can examine it in various lighting to be sure the stone has no haziness due to the fluor. That is rare, but there is a prejudice against fluor. for that reason. But the majority of blue flour. stones have no negative effects. I have one and love it. I used Good Old Gold to call in the stone for me, but I would only choose someone who can call it in and evaluate it for you and take idealscope images, etc.

I think I might have a good stone/ring put together already that is a stunner that might be a good option!

A pricescoper it selling it to fund a sapphire purchase and the setting is designed by Leon Mege www.artofplatinum.com

It's an ideal cut GIA graded G eyeclean SI2

Her ebay listing

You might be able to make an offer and there is a 3 day return on it (in case you find that the SI2 isn't to your liking) but most PSers are very picky and it IS possible to find an eye clean SI2-but they are rare and I think this is one of those cases.

ETA: I see the ebay listing has ended-she may have contacted www.goodoldgold.com to consign the ring but you can contract her via the preloved PS listing and I'm sure she'll respond right away and also send her a message via ebay even though the listing is no longer bidding able :)

Either way your budget is great and I know you'll find a great ring!

Why not buy a GIA/AGS graded diamond online? It saves you time and money.

Many people have given you excellent diamond suggestions here. Is there a reason you are not considering them?

Re: Getting Married March 31st 2012 - still need engagement

I went through a very similar quest (our budget, however, was not nearly as big as yours) last year so I'll share my story:

I also live in Southern Calfornia so I went through the whole LA jewelry district thing (not to mention Jared's and the other chain stores  ). I went to three jewelers in the jewelry district (all recommened by friends) and all of them showed me EGL-USA (and some GIA) graded diamonds. I am the girl and I have very color sensitive eyes. I told the jewelers that I wanted to see 1.2 - 1.3 cts G (or higher) and SI1 (or high) graded diamonds within my price range. I did not like any of the EGL graded stone I saw. For whatever reason they did not look appealing to me (this is before I found pricescope). We almost bought a 1.34 ct GIA E SI2 (absolutely eye clean) diamond but couldn't agree on the pricing with the seller. The sellers adjusted their priceds almost immediately every Friday after the new prices come out. Last March was the first big wave of diamond price increases and we were pretty much priced out. By the end of that trip I was sooo exhausted and discouraged that we had to go back to square one.

The weekend after our trip I decided to do some research online. The only online vendor I knew at the time was Blue Nile but I didn't feel comfortable buying a diamond without seeing it in person or at least an image of it. I came across Brian Gavin through a random search and contacted them. Leslie emailed me back almost right away (this was a Sundy) and helped me look for something in my price range. I also had two quite lengthy chats with Brian to ease my anxiety of buying online. At the end I got a beautifully cut stone that came a few grands under my budget.

From my experience it is very difficult to filter through all the stones to find one that's excellent cut when you shop at the B&M stores. I am not saying it is impossible but the time and stress I had to go through was almost not worth it. I would totally skip the whole B&M store for my upgrade in a few years and go straight to the online vendors. There's definitely gonna be stress involed still but the vendors seem so much more informed and buying from vendors such as BGD, Whiteflash or GOG, you almost don't have to be concerned with getting a badly cut stone. All you have to focus on is finding the one with the carat, color and clarity combo you want. I think the online vendors are priced very competitively. It appears you are trying to look for a bargain but with a time crunch like this, I don't think you have the time to look and wait for that. I personally think it's a good option to consider purchasing online.

Re: Getting Married March 31st 2012 - still need engagement

I second that. After buying a James Allen diamond online for a pendant, and Blue Nile Signature studs, I would find it hard to go back to B&M diamond shopping. If you shop online, not only can you trawl huge inventories and set your search parameters, but you can see all the measurements and angles, use tools like the Holloway Cut Advisor, and basically have total control of the specs you want to view. Playing around with all that info online, in privacy, at home, was just wonderful. And if you buy from a reputable jeweler, like the ones we all talk about on PS, you can get a refund or exchange easily if you don't like it! From James Allen I got a .52 diamond for a pendant, H&A, 0.8 on the Holloway Cut advisor, D color, SI2 but the inclusions are white so can't be seen at all, even at high magnification. This diamond cost just $1,050 about a year ago. This was one of the best purchases I've ever made. I believe I would never have got such a buy at a B&M store. If I'd walked into my local B&m and asked them to source D stones I believe I would have paid quite a premium.
