I have learned a great deal on this site....thanks to all those who lend their advice. I am getting close to a final selection of a stone for an engagement ring and I am looking for some honest and helpful opinions about the following stone. The stone is round and has an EGL Belgium cert. I have read and am aware about the dangers of an EGL cert but my personal inspection of the stone has been very pleasing. The final purchase will be dependent on an independent appraisal to make sure the cert is accurate and reliable.

2.08ct
Color: I
Clarity: VS2
8.24 X 8.21 X 5.09
Symetry: Excellent
Depth: 61.9%
Table: 57%
Crown: 15%
Pavilion: 43%
Girdle: Thin to Thick polished
Finish: Very Good
Photoluminescence: Slight

This stone is on the low end of my preferred color range but I am hoping that the ideal cut will make up for the color grade...that is if the color grade is accurate according to the appraisal.
Any comment or suggestions would be greatly appreciated....thanks in advance

Oh yeah....price is $13,000

Sound like you like it and know what you''re doing (getting an independent opinion). Good luck!

I would be concerned since you said that the colour is the low end of your comfort zone. Being a EGL certed stone, it is highly possible that it''s up to two grades lower than that, so I would definately get is appraised if you don''t want to drop down to what would be considered possibly a AGS K colour stone.

On the other hand, you have seen it and are happy with it, so I would say it''s still a goer, but again, only an independent appraisal is going to tell you what you are really dealing with. If it turns about to be graded lower, maybe you can negotiate on the price as I expect there would be quite a difference in pricing between grades in this size stone.

Good luck

The stone looks to have a decent 1.3 HCA but could be a wee bit off due to using % instead of angles. It sounds like you have seen the stone and like it. There''s nothing wrong with an EGL Belgium cert as long as the stone is what is as stated. For the $$$ you are spending, I''d feel better getting an independant aprpaiser to verify the colour and clarity grading to make sure I''m paying for a true I VS2 stone.

Sounds like you are well on the right track in getting the independant appraisal, I hope it checks out for you!

Looks like the cut is probably pretty nice. Let us know how the independent appraisal goes. I''ll be curious about how it checks out!

UPDATE

The appraisal backed up the certificate in every area but color.....the color was graded one lower, J instead of I.

The appraiser actually let me see the stone next the master color stones and, face up, the stone looks comparable to a G or H. The appraiser said this was prob due to a combination of ideal cut and slight fluorescence.

So as of now I am pleased and I think I will purchase the stone.

What paperwork should come with this purchase etc.?.....any input would be great.

The EGL cert and a sales receipt would come with the stone. Some jewelers also provide an insurance valuation, but most insurance company''s want the stone to be set before insuring the ring, so you''d still need a new statement for insurance once the stone is set, in most cases.

Sounds delicious, I won a J (albeit much smaller) and am extremely happy. I''ll never buy any other color grade.

Be sure to show us pric when you get it!
