Getting a valuation done

I have booked for my new ring to be valued for insurance purposes and it will be done on Monday (instore) but i dont know what to expect or what to ask? The ring was bought in Florida and we are uk, my stone has med blue flourecence so i know they will mention that as the uk jewellers dont do flourecence

but i dont know whether i should take my reciept with me, they have asked for as much paperwork that i can provide yes i do have the gia cert but i dont know whether to just say hubby bought it for me (which he did) and bluff that i dont know the cost or wouldnt it matter really?

Any help or advice as to what i should expect or what i should be asking would be great.

By all means take your lab paperwork, your receipt, your manufacturers warranty card, Idealscope and ASET images, brilliancescope reports and anything else you have. Before you start your appraisal session, be up front with your appraiser about what you want to learn from the session, what you have that may be helpful and what you expect of them. They may have a few suggestions on how to proceed. Have this conversation before you turn over any of the paperwork and possibly by phone or email before you even show up for your appointment and while you’re shopping for the right appraiser. Not all appraisers offer the same service. It should become pretty clear what's going to be helpful to do the job properly.

It's common for shoppers to feel the need to get an appraisal as confirmation that they got a ‘deal’ as explained by the seller and that showing the appraiser some or all of the paperwork will lead to a conflict of interest in answering this question. Sometimes it does. As the question and express your concern. There’s certainly nothing wrong with this question but it’s not the same task as preparing proper documentation for insurance or tax issues for example. Many people come in with a whole stack of questions that have wildly different and seemingly incompatible answers and it’s incumbent on the appraiser to make sure they understand the questions before they provide an answer. In the extreme, multiple reports end up being required and the client had no idea going in that there was even an issue. All they thought they wanted was a report with big number at the bottom. How hard can that be? Since most professional appraisers charge by the hour, this can lead to a frustrating experience for clients who “just want to know what it’s worth”, whatever that means to them. If you can start out by putting some thought into what you really want to know, what you’re trying to accomplish and communicate this clearly to the appraiser, the whole process goes much more smoothly.

I was about to post a question about where and how I can get a valuation/appraisal done in the UK, so your post and question is of interest. I hope you dont mind me asking, but who are you using for your valuation? I am having a few issues finding reputable appraisers here ( a case of not knowling where to look). So any help would be appreciated. I can travel to London if needed.

Hi basically i phoned around as i wasnt willing to have my new ring send away for 3 weeks so i looked for an instore appointment and found that Chisholm Hunter had the closest date and the valuation will be done via this company where you can look into days in your area or Ernest Jones do valuation days but the earliest i could get was 30th October. Considering my ring cost £3200 for D VS1 1 carat diamond set with 1/2 carat channel set and the closest offered to me in the uk was £6500 for a 1 carat F VS2 i feel the need to get a uk price as insurance will only cover whats been paid which wont replace the ring if anything happens (hopefully it wont)

Update is the ring was valued yesterday for insurance purposes and it seems it was done by a reputable group, i got 2 rings valued at this sitting and going by the other ring things seem to be reasonable and not too over inflated. He didnt really tell me anything that i didnt know myself. The only differance was the diamonds in the setting he valued them at .48 when the site listed them as being .52 but told me he can only quote on what he sees. He didnt take anything off for the medium blue flor which i thought he would and told me that i had a lovely stone and to be proud to wear it which i am.

He did ask for the gia cert and was impressed that i hadnt just picked a nice shiny ring and could talk a little talk

he didnt want to see my reciept and wanted to see the look on my face when he told me the valuation price which was £9000/$18000

i was gobsmacked and the mention of conflict diamonds came into the conversation, which having previously checked abazias website they dont touch conflict/blood diamonds and told the valuer this, he then asked what i had paid and informed me that i had indeed got a great stone at a great price and sometimes when a stone/diamond was that well priced there had to be a reason but not so in my case

and what i thought i could see in the side of the stone what i thought was the crystal isnt its a reflection and the crystal couldnt be seen even with his loupe

The only downside was the cost of the valuation which was £200 based on the valuation price and including my other ring but i wont be needing that done for a good 7 or 8 years now.

If you use someone other than the one i used can you please let me know what sort of costs ie set fee or a percentage as with it being my first valuation i havent a clue if the valuation cost was high or average.

will let you know who I use and how it went (when I finally get the ring!!!!). My next challenge is finding a UK insurer for the ring, can I ask who you are using or would recommend. We have been in the UK for one year now, so getting all the basics sorted out, but stuff to do with rings has not been on the list of priorities - so any insurance suggestions would really be welcome.

Ive insured my ring with my home insurance but as a special item which is adding £10 a month onto the premium and were insured with halifax home insurance as bank accounts are with them too so we get a special rate
