The latest issue of Gems and Gemology (Summer 2025) has a big review article on optical phenomena in gemstones. The article gives both basic and geeky descriptions and surveys the latest research.

I have to say that some of the questions I've have in the back of my mind were not answered - it seems that some things just aren't known yet. But the article is a 'must read' for gemstone geeks. And the specimens pictured are wonderful.
