We currently (and for the past 12 yrs) have Liberty Mutual. They've been great when it came to pay out of claims and price BUT in the last few years, their rates have gone up dramatically.

They are charging us $1768 per yr for our new car (this is with my husband's spotless driving record)

I've looked into Geico and Progressive and both are more than $500 LESS per year. Do any of you have experience with these companies and can recommend them?

What are your pro's and con's with these 2 companies? I appreciate ANY help.

Thx
Annette

I have had Progressive for 2 years now and LOVE it! I signed up completely online and my rate has gone down every 6 months.

My quote from Geico was still VERY expensive. So I didn't give them a second thought.

ETA: I'm not sure about other companies, but Progressive allows me to set up recurring payments from my checking account. They just send me an email about 5 days before the payment is due to let me know it is going to happen.

Have you tried asking your current insurance company if they can match the rates of the other two?

Just a thought, since you seem happy with your current company

Hi!

Yes I called up our current company and told them of our quotes and they said they currently do not have a price match policy (even for long time customers)

I''ve had both. Progressive I had for quite a while, but switched to Geico recently because they were cheaper.

I am a relatively safe driver (no tickets or accidents) so I haven''t had to file a claim.

I love that both companies have really easy to use websites, and the few times I''ve dealt with customer service they''ve been wonderful.

that''s good to know. In this case Geico was actually $100 cheaper /yr than progressive. I''m just worried that these 2 quotes are too good to be true.

In all honesty, it also depends WHICH state you are residing in. for me, Neither Progressive nor Geico offered competitive rates - I ended up with Amica which was WAY lower than the other 2.

thanks for answering. One more question...do you know anyone who''s had to file a claim with either and was it easy? The last time we had to file a claim was 10 yrs ago when a off duty cop
ran a red light and slammed into my husband...Liberty mutual were amazing with everyting and super quick.

We have Geico and have been VERY happy with them.

Somebody hit our car while it was parked so we had to have it fixed and get a rental car while it was in the shop. I could not believe how easy it was to work with Geico. At the time we were in an all-day program during the winter term at school so they sent the damage appraiser to our parking lot at school for us since it had to be done during the day. Cooridinating the rental car was super easy and when we had to keep the car for a few extra days because our car was still in the shop, they added on the time with no problem.

thx for the info. Can I ask you one more question...do you find that after the 6mo of your policy the rates go up for the next 6mo? Currently our policy is by the year but both Geico and Progressive seem to have 6mo long policies

I''ve had Geico since I started driving (7 years ago?) and I have been on my mom''s policy the whole time. But my rates have always been super reasonable.
I also got hit in a parking lot, I filed my claim online and then someone called me to confirm all of the information and they set up where I could take me car to. The shop guy actually let me use a car he had for the days it took to fix my car. It was super easy.
Now I have a different car and have my BF on my policy (male, some accidents, under 25) and our 6 mo rate is still REALLY good for having him on the policy...it''s just a bit more than I was paying before including better limits.

So I really like Geico, it''s worked out well for me.

In all honesty, car insurance is highway robbery (I think that''s the phrase lol) so I''d do a price comparison and choose the cheapest one.

I switch every six months between Geico, Allstate, State Farm, and Progressive. It all depends on who is giving me the best deal. Customer service is all the same, totally depending on the person you get on the line. The procedures to assess your car after an accident is standard amongst all the insurance agencies. There''s really no difference except price.

ita it is highway robbery. I just can''t believe that I haven''t compared prices sooner

i''ve been using Progressive for years and i absolutely LOVE them! i had my car stolen 3 years ago and they were a dream to work with. everything from coordinating a rental, to processing the claim went smoothly and my agent was incredibly helpful and understanding. my stolen car was eventually found however it wasn''t salvageable, so i ended up getting a new car.

about a month after purchasing it, i was about to leave for work when i noticed a big dent on my passenger-rear door. i live in a condo complex so i had no idea how it happened and it could''ve been done by a number of people. from the note a neighbor left on my car, someone ran into her parked car which caused it to hit into mine.

again, Progressive was awesome to work with even though i now had 2 claims within a month. surprisingly, my rates never went up either!

I''ve been with Progressive for a while. Usually they give you a pretty good rate, and a $50 initial discount when you sign up online. So, when you renew after your first six months, your insurance will be $50 more.

I have Progressive and was hit by someone who had Progressive. If you ever have an accident, try to pick your own shop to do the work because if you choose one of their partners, they get a discount (cheap work) and once you sign the form saying that you agree to use their partner body shop, they are pretty much calling the shots with your vehicle. I was hit from the back and the bumper of my truck dropped as though gravity suddenly increased by 150%. They straightened the frame and put a new bumper on the truck. I had to fight them to put a new receiver on it. Then, they did not put a new hitch, and left the old ball.

When I talked to another shop, they said the integrity of the metal of the frame, bumper, receiver, hitch, and ball was compromised, and that the hitch and ball should have been replaced. The other shop said that the shop who did the work would be liable for anything I towed with my truck because of their work. So if I were to tow a brand new $35K boat with my truck, and the hitch failed, then the body shop would be liable. Sold the truck, so towing with it is not a problem. bah

If you use Progressive, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS choose your own shop in case of an accident. I pay right at $300 every six months for liability for a 97 Ford Taurus I bought in 08 for $400.

Let''s crunch some numbers... $600 a year for insurance on a $400 car.

This may be a little late, but just wanted to say that my father was in a terrible accident about 8 years ago. He was insured by Geico, and the person who hit him had one of the big name companies (I forget which one.) I couldn''t believe how easy and helpful the Geico rep who helped me was. They paid quickly and with no questions asked once they had the police report, and helped me sort through the process of everything that I needed to do on both sides of the insurance. If I was ever insurance shopping, I''d start with them.

thanks for the info. I think we''ve made our choice and will contact Geico. Sorry to hear that your dad had to go through a terrible accident.

I have progressive and I love them. I have Progressive Direct. I am not sure if that makes a difference. They have great rates and are really great to their people. I have called at 9pm before and I was able to talk to someone. They were nice, helpful and easy to understand. If you are between Geico and Progressive I would choose progressive.
