The stones are amazing!
Now, this is not a definite way to check garnets, but they are ferromagnetic. I bought a strong magnet, our my garnets on pieces of Styrofoam in a small water pan, so that they would float, and checked. The magnet dragged them. I was told that it would work for stones below 5 ct, but even some of my stones above 5ct responded the same way. I do not know how synthetics would behave, but one of my "old" Orange stones was not dragged to the magnet. I post it here mostly as a curious phenomenon, and also because it is a good way to discriminate "real" Bohemian garnet jewelry from paste imitations.
Is wilds eBay site connected to Idar-Oberstein company? Half of their vendors are Wildes.

Thanks for posting this method, but just curious about the water pan if it is metal material, wouldn't the magnet drag the pan too? How can you tell whether the magnet drag the garnet or the pan?

I'm a little confused with your question, wilds ebay store seems only have a few stones, they are a gem company, they do not have vendors...Are you referring to custom gemstone studio? That site has many vendors participate with them. Wilds is one of them, although recently joined. This company seems just opened eMarket? They registered everything recently...ebay, etsy, flickr, custome gemstonestudio...Fairly new
