Hello all,

I'm thinking about buying an H stone in a 3ct. I read a post that discussed a round 1.5ct G vs. H stone and the general consensus was one couldn't tell the difference. Someone wrote, in smaller stones stones it was harder to tell the difference. If the stone is 3ct. is it going to be that much easier to tell G vs. H? It's a cushion cut stone, excellent, excellent and no fluorescence. Thank you for any help or advice you can give me.

This is my favorite video on diamond grading and pricing. It's long, but I think it will help you understand color and pricing. When I was helping my dad pick out a diamond for my mom, my mom wanted a "perfect diamond" and would not settle for less than F, vs2. My dad got her a G,si1 and it is stunning. I specifically asked the jeweler to bring in at least 5 diamonds all triple x and hca score <2. He threw in the G because he loved the stone without my dad and I knowing. We chose the G. It outperformed the others and my mom has no clue it's not at least an F. So I doubt you will be able to tell the difference.

Larger stones do show more body color. That said, it depends - if they are a high G and a low H, then yes you may see the difference. If they're low G vs high H, maybe not. You need to see them in person. But H is still white; color starts to show more in the I/J range.

With cushion cuts it's different.

And color isn't your biggest concern. Please read below.

The entire purpose of faceting a diamond is to reflect light.
How well or how poorly a diamond does this determines how beautiful it is.
How well a diamond performs is determined by the angles and cutting. This is why we say cut is king. With fancies though (anything other than a round brilliant), that is a little complicated. But no other factor: not color, not clarity has as much of an impact on the appearance of a diamond as its cut.

There really is no other way to determine if you have a good cushions is to see images of the stones, and then you need is a way to check actual light performance of your actual stone.

That's what an ASET image does. http://www.highperformancediamonds.com/index.php?page=education-performance Please read.
And ASET shows you how and wear your diamond is reflecting light, how well it is going at it, and where you are losing light return That is why you won't see us recommending vendors like Blue Nile, as they do not provide images or ASET images for their diamonds. James Allen and Good Old Gold do this. So do Brian Gavin and Whiteflash and High Performance Diamonds.

Or you can get an AGS0 cushions, but those are rare, and usually branded. . GIA does not grade their cushions for performance. Only AGS does. And any lab other than GIA or AGS is not worth considering at all.

lease read my posts in this thread (pay special attention to the longer posts, and anything in red): https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/new-and-looking-for-help-choosing-cushion-cut-diamond-to-oz.205195/

I doubt anyone looking at it will say "oh that's an H, you should have gotten a G!"

Thank you all for your useful feedback. It's much appreciated. This is my first time diamond shopping and I'm looking forward to never having to buy an engagement ring again.

For the stone, with the specifics I've mentioned, exactly 3.02.ct., what would one say is a good price, ballpark. Thank you.

Price depends on cut.

You have given us no information that would help us help you with what you are asking. But you can do a search yourself. Make sure you keep the lab report the same. GIA or AGS cushions are the only ones worth your time. www.pricescope.com/diamond-search-results

So you want a 3.00+ carat stone - what is your budget? And what colour and clarity do you prefer? Everyone will help point out the best cut stones available in your budget.

It is better you give us your budget and everyone will guide you in the right direction.... Different stones with the same specs can have different pricing due to things like fluorescence, graining issues, they can be too deep and face up small they can just be generally smucky cuts there are a range of factors that impact the price.

It also depends on the lighting. I have a 1 carat H and under natural light or florescent it looks white. Under Led it certainly looks a touch warmer. Led does make it go off like a firework though. I wish I could have sprung for g or better but was already maxed on budget and put cut first. We are both happy but the warmth is noticeable
