Looks like a dark inclusion. VS2's aren't necessarily eye-clean. Although it is rare to see an inclusion with the naked eye in a VS2, it is possible depending on the diamond’s cut and where the inclusion is located. An inclusion/blemish's location, orientation and visiblity all contribute to a diamond's clarity grade. This is probably the only inclusion in the diamond, and since it is relatively "small" it can explain the VS2 grading.

Yikes, looks like a black spot is in the center of the diamond. Mine is a VS2 and has a couple little spots on the plot map of my GIA cert, but it looks clean face up.

Even if it passes under the GIA guidlines as being a VS2, I wouldn't pay $1800 for a stone with a black spot, especially when there are SI1s that are less expensive and don't have black spots!

The black spot is clearly visible in the Virtual Loupe. However, because the diamond is only a 0.55 and looks like a really excellent cut, so you may not notice it. Moreover, if you do manage to see the inclusion, you will SEE it. This would be a big gamble in my opinion. Since the spot is right in the middle of the diamond, its not even possible to cover it with a prong from the setting.

I would say move on and try to find a VS2 with any inclusions near the edge of the diamond. That way you can cover it up with a prong and it will look more like a VS1 or VVS2.

I had no intentions of buying this stone with a black spot on the table, it was one I surfed thru when looking at stones today, and the VS rating and it being a nasty black spot on the table had me wondering.

In a stone that size I bet it is eye clean!

Clarity grading does not care about eye clean though, you can find VS2s that have visible inclusions.

ouch

I saw a stone the other day that is a VS diamond that is very clean EXCEPT for one black inclusion. Would definitely be a deal breaker for me but some people would buy it as the inclusion is partly prongable. VS rating because of only one inclusion; that one is very visible. Even VS graded stones have to be scrutinized for their inclusions.

I agree with Dreamer. Strong chance that stone is totally eyeclean! It is a minute spot in a .55 diamond!
