My jeweler recently received the engagement ring setting I custom ordered; they want me to drop off my stone with them for a few days while they work on putting it on and engraving an inscription. Is there anything I should watch out for, or I can do, to ensure no funny business is done (e.g. swapping stones, etc.)?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I heard something somewhere about getting your stone mapped or plotted so that you can compare it against your map when you get it back ... or if the jeweler just knows that you have this stone mapped, it may deter them from doing any funny business if that was their intention ...

Just thought I would share ... I''m sure one of the experts around here will have really good advice for you. Good luck!

two things.. if you dont trust your jeweler to be handle your goods, you probably need to go to a different jeweler. Second, know your inclusions, that way you can always ID your diamond. If you have too a hard time finding your inclusions, perhaps a girdle inscription, but this can ofcourse be replicated on the new fake stone your untrustworthy jeweler has put in your ring.

I gather that the stone is being laser inscribed by the jeweller?

not really much you can do without going ahead and taking the stone out again, especially if it''s a VS stone with inclusions that aren''t easy to find.

If it''s really an issue for you though you can atleast take down the millimeter measurements of the round stone -- the average diamater and depth (if the setting allows for gauging the depth of the stone, depends on what mounting its set in). you''ll need a measuring gauge made to measure to 1/100 of a millimeter. just an idea. but in the end it''ll come down to trust. don''t think any right minded jeweler with years of histroy in the business would ever think of doing something like that though and jeopardizing his entire reputation.
