I just read an interesting "style" article by Amber Michelle for Rapaport magazine (August edition) about the new/very old jewelry fashion using rough, opaque, off-color and super included Diamonds in designer jewelry.

I am noticing more and more (well known/anonymous designers are incorporating rough (uncut or partly cut) Diamond material into their designs...

A complete opposite to the precision symmetry, high quality we most often chat on around PS.

Some see it as a more fashion/trendy phase...., especially during these days of economic volatility
Some see it as the perfect product for the independent woman who as Amber Michelle puts it: "These Diamonds speak to a woman who doesnt want to wear her husbands wallet around her neck, but wants something more personal."
Some see it as an original one-of-a-kind ''artsy'' type jewelry...
And..., some see it as a product closer to nature..., what do they call it..., Eco...., or something??

I would guess there are a lot of other reasons...

What are some of the PS''ers thoughts?

I think they are fun and different.

Plus it probably makes for a fun conversational piece

I don't have any rough diamond jewelry, but I have a funky spiral ring from Lily Barrack that has rough tanzanite, aquamarine, and "Herkimer diamond" (actually a kind of quartz). I adore it and think of it as really unique. She has a website with a bunch of similar rough pieces too. I think it's a great way to use stones that might not have been "gem quality" or might be too included to look nice when cut and polished, and it showcases their natural beauty.

I have a tennis bracelet with rough diamonds. I don''t wear it often, but that''s really only because the clasp is very loose and I''m afraid I''ll lose it!

Here is a thread to the Todd Reed ring I just got last Friday. link It is made of antique rose cut stones and raw diamond cubes. I bought it because I was looking for something "different."

This quote is interesting to me from your post Dia:

One of the things that I love about this ring is that the people who will look at it and appreciate it will do so becuase it's pretty and unusual but not overtly *expensive looking.* I think a lot of people who comment on my other jewelry (e.g., The Brick) are mentally seeing dollar signs as much as they are looking at the item itself, but with this piece very very few people will ever consider that it was not an inexpensive purchase.

I think your ring is fabulous..., congrats and enjoy...
BTW..., a coincidence: The above mentioned article in Rapaport features an image of a ring designed by Todd Reed which looks extremely similar to yours except it has a rather large half polished opaque center Diamond...

Oh how funny!

Thank you for the kind words about my ring--I''m having a really good time wearing it.

The whole "moghul" thing is just a new trend IMO. Tons of really poorly native cut diamonds have finally found a home

I do like Dee''s ring very much, but they are well cut rose diamonds, not included hunks of diamonds that look like something I whipped out as my first lapidary attempt.

Moghul "thing" is a very old trend/fashion..., probably around 4-500 years old and longer, you are right that its gets more attention by the media in the last few years though...
I think these ''poorly native cut diamonds" can be gorgeous gems..., but thats just my weird taste I guess...

I don''t think I would make the leap to suggesting it''s about a crappy economy...although I could be wrong. I do think there is something to the eco argument though. There are probably many women out there who are modern, stylish, like diamonds, but want something a little "greener" or funkier. I also think these stones might apeal to women who are either slightly younger, or who already own other diamonds. As women consume more diamonds in general, they might broaden their tastes.

Diagem,

Nice design .

For me interesting to combine H&A and semirough ( +/_ 50% surface should be rough, other part could have 2-4 Hearts and Arrows )

:)

Where is the rough???
If you cant apply rough texture to your software (yet
2.gif
), add some (gray) color to the area...

I want to see how the Diamond will appear if the center part is not polished...

Diagem,

What is central part in your understanding?

Round cut has 4 more and less Independent diagonal segments. We need polish 2 segments on crown, pavilion +table and do not touch other rough part at all.

Polish part will looks very similar to full diamond cut( segments are “Independent” )

Serg...,

Did you ever experiment this on live material???

If no..., please inform me after you do...

Dia, I realize that your thread has gone to a technical aspect that is well over my head but I just wanted to pop back in and say that I met Todd Reed in person today (SUCH a nice man!) and he actually gave me a copy of the article from Modern Jeweler that you mentioned. We had a great long chat about many things, including his philosophy and what he does what he does in terms of the materials he uses. It was very enlightening. Thanks for starting this thread, it was very thought provoking for me!

I''ve always liked the look and now I''ve been seeing them in magazines. I had a chance to look at some up close at the new Debeers store here in San francisco and I really like the look! It might just be a trend. But I think it''s fun and different.

DiaGem you might not have a job if this takes off!!!

But having just recived the 29 Worlds most Famous Diamonds stones cut by Scott Sucher for display next week in my Canterbury store, it occurrs to me that I have none of the worlds most famous uncut diamonds?

Nice!!!
Enjoy them while you can..., even though they are not the true material!
But I do think Scott Sucher work is important and I wish more jewelers would want to display these in their jewelry stores for education purposes!

Maybe we can talk to the MMD producers into producing the "world most famous UNCUT Diamonds" for you Garry....
