I am looking to purchase an engagement ring, I know squat about diamond and I don''t have money to throw away. I am not interested in learning from the chain stores that tell you they sell only the best. I don''t want a large diamond, but I want a quality diamond that is not going to break the bank. I am not interested in beginning my married life flat broke having made a bad purchase.

Let start from the beginning.
What should I be looking for in a diamond?

One option that I have:

I have a ring the I inherited and I am not sure about the quality of the stone that is in it. I could have the stone set in another ring if it is worthy for an engagement ring. How best can I determine the value of the stone in the ring I have?

Thanks

I''d take the stone that you inherited to an independent appraiser to determine the quality and cut of the stone. As for what to look for in a diamond, I''d read the tutorials on here. Cut is key!!

Welcome, I agree w/Kaleigh! If you don''t like it then come back here and give us your budget and maybe then we can help you start looking. Cut is the most important!

I agree with both my friends here.

1) Tutorial is above, under Knowledge...also linked here...

2) And...depending on your location, a list of recommended independent appraisers is above, under Resources, also linked here..

Good wishes, and let us know if we can help!

If you can, post a picture of the inherited ring. Very often, the diamond is best left in the setting it is in, particularly if it is an antique. I''d probably give her that as a gift later but get a new e-ring. What is your budget and we can show you some examples of ideal cut stones.
