From $75,000.00 to $34,000.00 (Deal or NOT) Bailey Banks and Biddle Closing

Hello Pricescopers,

I was married Tuesday to the most wonderful man in the entire world. After five years I know all his bad habits and all his weird quirks....... so I can truly say, he is wonderful.

We had the most gorgeous rings made and I had a diamond in the ring but took it back because its color was extremely flat (wow factor wise) and didn''t sparkle in certain lights. My husband is ready for me to have a diamond instead of a cz in my setting.

Today we went to Bailey, Banks and Biddle who is closing their doors. They had a ring (stone) that I am extremely interested in, but need to make sure it will not flatten out in light like my last diamond.

Here are all the specs, I hope ya''ll will be able to give me the hardcore facts.


GIA certified and inscribed (following info from that certificate)
It is a 3.00 (exactly) carat diamond.
G- color
VS1- clarity
Cut Grade Good
Measurements are 9.07, 9.17, 5.72
Table- 59.0%
Depth-62.7%
Crown-32.5 degrees
Pavilion-41.8 degrees
Girdle-medium to very thick
(the salesperson said in percentages it would be Crown-50% and Pavilion-45%)

The diamond was priced at $75,600.00 and because the store is closing, the price is $34,700.00
It is in a platinum setting that I will not be using.

I don''t know if the diamond was overpriced to begin with, or super underpriced now............. Please let me know YES or NO......... or wait a little longer for a better diamond/deal

i assume that this is a round diamond? if so i am not wowed by the numbers. it is too deep, with a very thick girdle and the price for a 3 carat is very low..........

It is a Round.... I guess the price is low because of the liquidation and chapter 11 filed by the owner of BB&B

So.............will this diamond have the same problem as the last..... flattening out in certain lights.

This diamond gets a bad HCA score (5.6). Yes, I would be very concerned about its performance.

Ignoring cut quality the price is very attractive for its weight and colour.

Most people on these forums will tell you that cut is most important though and unfortunately it looks like the quality is lacking from this stone. It may still be an attractive diamond but won''t be a top performer and since you say you''ve been disappointed by a diamond lacking the wow factor before I would pass. Especially given it is priced to sell for a liquidation sale, you probably wouldn''t be able to return it if it did turn out to be a disappointment.

Its not the best cut and the pavilion angle is very steep. The diamond won't sparkle as well as it could do due to the cut proportions, you have a fantastic budget if you can afford to spend 35k, I would get another stone quite frankly even if you have to look for lower colour and clarity, but one which is better cut. A well cut stone of G VS1 will cost considerably more than that one looking online.

If you really love the size of this diamond and want to buy it I urge you to check it out away from any store lights to see how it looks, you mention your last diamond went flat once away from the store so you want to make absolutely sure with this stone, chances are it might go flat like the last one.

Pass on the stone.
You have no recourse to the store, it is closing. What if you take it to an appraisor to look at lets say for insurance purposes, and the stone is cracked, you are SOL!

Another poster on this thread had good advice, give PSers your budget and requirements and let the people on this forum help you pick out a stone you will be wowed with. Best of luck.

Last night I visited another store from this chain of stores that is closing down.....

I did not really look at diamonds, but the other prices did not reflect much of a "bargain." (Items like watches where the price is pretty musch standard/has a "list" price you can recognize.)

With diamonds, it would be hard to determine whether the stone actually did list for over 70K or whether that price had been further inflated for the sale.

Could you get an independent appraisal of this stone before making a final decision??
