Not sure if this is the right thread, if not will you please move it.

Hello everyone. So a friend of mine needs some advice. He bought a diamond quite some time ago, so he is unable to return it. His relationship didn’t work out and needs to sell the diamond. I guess the diamond is not certified, like GIA certified. How would you suggest he sells it? He wants to get a good chunk of his money back. I think he paid like $4500 for it and that was a little under a year ago. I have seen the diamond and it is super pretty. The inclusions are more noticeable from the bottom than face up.

What would you all suggest is the best route for getting the most money for it? He is not in a hurry at all.

Can any common person get a GIA certificate? I told him that if they are certified they are easier to sell. But I know nothing.

Would consignment at a jeweler or auction house be better than the newspaper? How does consignment usually work?

What about eBay how would that work for someone who has never sold anything?

How does it work to sell a diamond for cash at a jeweler?

Are there any other ways to sell it?

If you have any questions, I will answer them best to my knowledge I only know so much about the situation. Any help or suggestions would be great. He has no idea what to do. When he told me about his situation I instantly thought about Pricescope and how generous everyone is with their tips!! Thank you in advance!

Well, you could try ebay. I''d find someone willing to sell it under his name who has a high rating. Then, I''d start the bidding price at something substantial (not a $1), so that people believe it really is worth something. Maybe try a starting bid of $2,500 and a ''buy it now'' price of $3,200. You never know who will bite. It just takes one.

I would contact bill pearlman and jamesallen.com. Sometimes they consign diamonds.

Is the diamond set in a ring or loose? I don''t think that GIA grades diamonds unless they are loose, but I may be wrong. Without a certificate, any potential buyer would need to see it for himself, so something like ebay would be out as an option. Plus, since he''s never sold anything on ebay, he won''t have any "seller history", so people are not likely to buy a diamond from him.

If he sells it to a retailer, they''re going to want to buy it at a price that will allow them to resell it and make a profit - so don''t expect too much $$ going that route. the best bet for him to recoup his losses is to resell it to another individual. perhaps posting it on a bulletin board like craigslist?
