OK I''ve got them in my shopping cart....and can''t decide on the backs:

I currently have .70ctw studs with a friction fit back which are great for me.

But moving up (YIPPEEEEEEEE) to 2ctw I''m wondering if I should go to screw backs? The style is a standard 4-prong double gallery basket in WG....rounds.

Pros and Cons? help! My ''send'' finger is gettin'' itchy!

Friction backs - my own screw backs are a huge PITA!

Good luck - cant wait to see :-).

HI:

Plain old butterflies! Big ones! I had screw backs on my golden pearls earrings--I didn''t hate them but I wouldn''t buy them again. The la pousette (tension) backs I had on my 2ctw diamond earrings were troublesome/finiky and I just lost one down the duct when I was cleaning my earrings (literally "sprang" out of my fingers....). So back to butterflies!

cheers--Sharon

Ohhh how fun! Where are you getting them from???

I theoretically like friction backs...but I always do worry about losing one. I guess that is what insurance is for!

thanks Grace.

What is it about the screw backs that makes them a PITA???

I''ve never tried those kind on and am wondering....(and, they are a $25 upcharge so I *thought* it was a good thing...).

I like my screw backs on my Tiff bezel earrings. They just take a little longer and more patience to get on/off. But at the same time I never worry about losing one!

When you screw them on do you have to screw them right to the end of those 'thready' things on the post?

I like my earrings a bit on the loose side and the friction back is good for me...but the screw back seems more secure but then is it tighter on your earlobe?

I guess that''s the thing I like about the butterflies: I can upsize them without messing around with the stud itself.....

Hey LS--how exciting!

For me, friction all the way--don''t have the patience for screw backs.

Cannot wait to see pictures!!

No, you don''t have to thread them all the way at all. I actually usually just thread them a few threads in and have never had them loosen. I also like my earrings a little loose which is why the screw backs work well for me. Just not something I would want to deal with if I were taking my earrings in/out 2-3x per day.

I went with friction fit....worst case I can change the mounting out another time if it''s not great.

woo hoo

Got here a bit late, but you made the right decision. I don''t have 2 ctw diamond studs (you lucky duck!), but I have lots of colored gemstone studs, and friction works fine. For my diamond studs, I did upgrade to heavy-weight friction backs, which don''t slide on and off as easily as lighter weight friction backs. That is an option, if you are worried that the regular friction backs might slip off. You can have a local jeweler order them for you.

I tried on screwbacks once, and my tender ears would never be able to take the scratching from inserting screws into them. There have been threads here where people were complaining about their diamond studs making their ears bleed, and it turned out they were wearing screwbacks. Although, I''m sure many people have no problems at all.

As you know, pictures are mandatory!!

hi Lost.... late here as well, but wanted to say that i am with the others that friction is better. i found screwbacks to be such a PITA that i stopped wearing my studs. someday i will get around to switching them back to friction. i was constantly checking them and tightening them (they tended to de-thread quite often). once i checked and the backing was gone.... luckily the earring was still there though.

so, good choice IMO. can''t wait to see them!

I found screw backs a real pain in the rear. They get hair all twisted in there, and are time consuming if you remove them to clean them often... And I never knew how far to screw them in--which resulted in stripping and obsessive compulsive checking if they were still there...

Hi LS,

Sorry about the late reply - just got back from picking up a few things. Anyway, I also opted for screw backs because I felt they would be more secure, and that my earrings are a tad on the heavy side already so I wanted the extra security. They take a few minutes to put on and take off, and I have also lost the backs once or twice because its cumbersome trying to screw them on. Mine are in platinum and I have had them for almost a year now, and I have noticed that the threads are beginning to get worn on one of them. When I find the time, I will just switch them to la pousettes.

You must be excited!!!!

Thank you everyone, for your SPEEDY replies!

I knew, that in the crux of the moment, just prior to hitting "CHECKOUT", I could count on my PS friends for input!

I''m looking forward to trying them out...might take a while to get used to the extra weight

but I''ll take one for the team!

I have too agree with the other posters, though late in writing. I have screw backs on my 2 ct studs and hate them!!!! I don’t even wear them half the time due to the inconvenience of the screw backs

. I am going to have them remounted soon into martini mounts soon and the will have friction backs.
Hope you enjoy your new earrings!!!!

Great choice! I prefer friction backs. I cannot wait to see your pictures!

Thank you Macie.

Between what you, Grace, rainydaza and Just Julia had to say, I''m confident I''ve made the right decision.

woohoooooooo so exciting!

How exciting. I would go friction backs. I HATE screw backs with a passion. Lack of skill on my part most of the time but still a pain.

yay LostSapphire! I am so excited for you - i can''t wait to see some ear shots

great choice with the friction backs, i too like marcyc, am not a fan of screwbacks. i have a pair with them and they are annoying to remove and put on - maybe its my fault that i clean my jewelry too often!

I''ve found that gold screw backs tend to wear down the thread on the post, resultsing in the butterfly bit slipping off. I think you made a great decision!!

I know I''m late but I had screwbacks also and hated them. Takes too long to screw and unscrew. I think you made a great choice. Post some pictures when they arrive.
