Friction back posts and nuts consist of a smooth post with a notch on the end of it. The earring nut just slides on and kind of catches on the notch. I''ve heard them called butterfly backs, but we just call them friction backs...
I truly prefer the Guardian type locking post and nut configurations, the posts look pretty much the same and slide into the ear without threads which can tear up the holes... The earring nut has a locking mechanism which is released by pressing down two buttons on opposite sides of the earring nut (which is flat) and lock into place in the groove when pulled back towards the end of the post.
