French speakers: what's a french cut diamond in FRENCH??

This is driving me insane... I'm living in France and have great access to antique jewelry shopping. But I haven't seen a single french cut. I've seen calibre cut sapphires and I have seen french cut sapphires being referred to as "saphir calibré". No luck googling either...


Anyone got a clue?

I was going to suggest you find one and then ask what is is called. Since that is apparently not an option (since the whole point is you are are looking for one), take a photo or photo into a jeweler's shop and ask him (or her) for the name. I wouldn't know a French cut if I fell over one! Bonne chance!

How about diamant carré en croix à fond plat...a flat bottom cross cut square diamond?

I have three things that I have received at various points, so here they are! An antique brooch conversion from Inken Krause. Really nicely done on the conversion! The CvB ring is a pad sapphire she had in the vault and is more petite than I normally go for. It's very pretty, but I don't think...

Thanks for the suggestion of antique carré. Some would describe a french cut like this, but it's apparently not the proper term..
Neither is, unfortunately taille Française nor even taille Suisse.
I have only ever seen them mislabeled on the internet. The one band I saw in an overpriced antique jewelry shop was labeled baguette. Which isn't accurate. But the owner treated me like the total jewelry nut that I am. And insisted on baguette.

But the French tend to have a distinct word for EVERYTHING. That word has got to exist!

Could you print out this page (translated into french) and show it to a jeweller? Maybe a summary of the history of the cut might prompt them as to the term they'd use to describe it? Although if you're seeing them mislabelled in shops, that may not help at all!

Pages 244 and 245 have some terms for diamond cuts that are accepted French.

I do not know if these results are dispositive. In other words, perhaps new terms for cuts have now been accepted as French. But the Academy does decide which words are French and which are not as kipari indicated.
