Is this real I know it's seen better days.

Bring it to a jewellery store that has an in-house bench/gemmologist who can check to see whether it is real or not (diamond tester).

I just wish I knew if it was real or not. I can't really afford an appraisal.

The testing with the diamond tester is generally done for free in front of you whilst you wait. I do wonder though why you doubt it is real, not that it's any of my business.

I'm also curious about that center red stone ... possibly-ruby or spinel.
I'm curious whether it is natural or synthetic, and if natural whether it is treated or untreated.

But the prongs holding the diamonds look kinda low-quality which may suggest the stones are not real.

I agree with Kenny that the prongs look really cheap and that is not in favor of it being real. Is the ring marked on the inside of the band indicating if its actually gold or not? If it is actually gold then there is a better chance that the stones are real.

If your jeweler charges to identify the stones (especially diamonds) go to another jeweler who doesn't.

The style of the ring looks very similar to the one my grandmother owned. It was the real deal!!!
