Found a diamond cleaning out a jewelry box... worth GIA?

Hi all! Long time no see!

My husband and I were cleaning out a ton of old stuff from under our sinks and found a small packet inside a coin purse. It's my husband's writing but he doesn't remember buying it or who it came from (we've had quite a few relatives pass in 2014 and 2015, sadly.) The packet outside says "1ct Old Euro for B" (me). Inside is a sparkly little guy with a noticeable cream color cast. Probably an L or so? At 1 ct (assuming it is, and is real) would an L color be worth GIA grading before selling (probably through consignment)? Or should we just have our local guy eyeball it and set it in something?

I'll try to get a picture once the sun comes out. :naughty:

In other news, we've taken over 500lbs of donations or 750+ items to Goodwill this month! I feel like this is our reward!

I only have my iphone camera so I apologize for the crappy pics:

I would, absolutely.

Agreed. (Or to AGS, depends on how long they're taking right now.)

I wish I found diamonds while I was cleaning my house lol -

If I was sure I was going to keep the diamond and never sell it, I don't think I would get it graded - that's just me, others might feel differently. But if there's any possibility you're going to sell it, I would send it to GIA.

No ideas about its origins? That's too bad - I hope it comes to you or your hubby one of these days! Have you decided whether you'll be keeping it or selling it?

I think I'd get it graded just to satisfy my curiosity!

If we can get a decent amount for it, (i.e. 50% of its retail approx) we will likely sell. If not, we will keep. I am meeting the estate jeweler we buy from (GIA grad and in business over 50 years) today to see what he thinks it could be worth, if anything. Obviously we would not sell to him since that would be a conflict of interest. If he offers a trade I like I may take that. We shall see....

Yeah, but if you don't know exactly what you have in terms of color/clarity it's a little harder to figure out an appropriate asking price…I'm thinking you might be better off having an independent appraisal done, rather than having an informal evaluation done by someone who owns a jewelry store. I guess you could also look at vendors to find comps, I saw this one on Jewels by Grace - the thing is it's hard to compare right now, because at this point you don't really know what you have. Good luck with whatever you decide to do, and congrats for finding a hidden treasure!

Well, we had it looked at and measured. 1) it's real; 2) it's 6.03mm across (est 1 ct), old European cut; I-J color. He suggested a GIA cert if we plan to sell or consign, or AGS (as GIA can be hard on color apparently?) thoughts?

How can I post a video without adding it to my photobucket site?

If you decide to sell, please do post in pre-loved. It's beautiful and I'm looking for something like it!!!

I decided to sell, I am working out the details with Grace right now and will post in pre-loved. I don't see any way to notify you when it's posted though. Do you feel comfortable sharing your email, then I'll copy and you can delete? It will be 2-3 weeks as I need to send it to GIA for exact specs.

Thanks!

All I can say if that sort of thing was to happen, I would definitely clean my house more often!

Looks very nice, I would be curious enough to get a cert.

I'll keep an eye out for it. I think we're not supposed to put personal email addresses on here.
