i bought my fiancees engagement ring this summer from pearlmans and we are both very pleased with it. question is since rings should be taken in to get inspected for the prongs and diamonds etc.. how does someone do this if they bought the ring remotely? do they have to go to an independet appraiser? i dont really want the ring appraised just inspected.. im going to add the ring to our home insurance policy and they also may require it getting inspected..

i know this has come up for a lot of you on there that have bought from GOG or other online vendors..

what do you do??

I have a local jeweler who I have a relationship with and he is happy to inspect any of my pieces for me.

ditto for me. I go to a nice family owned local store, not a big chain, and they are very friendly. I would caution you to not allow the store to do any work if it needs to be done. Many times outside work on a ring will void the warranty provided by the designer. But, nothing wrong with having someone local check it out.

Actaully the original question got me thinking about the appraising... (I''m new around here and trying to soak in the wealth of info!):

When ppl buy a diamond from an online dealer (just the stone), does it get mailed to the purchaser or does the vendor send it to an appraiser near the purchaser?

If it goes directly to the buyer, would the next step be to find an appraiser to verify the specs on the stone and go see the stone? If all''s good, then obviously the stoen is kept. But if the buyer doesn''t like the stone is it send back via the appraiser?

Also, if the stone and a setting are purchased seperately (from different vendors online), would we search out a reputable jewellery shop to set the stone? Would they do this if I didn''t buy either the stone or the setting from them? Or is the vendor of the stone supposed to send the stone away to whomever they are going to buy the setting from so that the stone is set and then the whole thing goes back to the vendor?

Sorry if these are basic questions, I still feel so naive even after all the reading I''ve done :)

thx

Cheers.
