I've posted before about comparing two stones (one which was more expensive to the Tiffany from a retail custom jewller).

I've now done some pricing online and it seems that for a comparable price I can get these two:

1. Tiffany - G VS2 1.11ct measures: 6.66 - 6.70 x 4.10 mm
2. Online - F VS2 1.2 ct measures 6.76 - 6.78 x 4.23 mm

Both Excellent cut etc.

I know I'm getting the Tiffany tax free and will be paying tax on the online but it doesn't seem like a huge jump between the two and I've read so much chat about the savings to be made online. Will the difference in the way these stones look justify passing up the Tiffany brand? That's my main question.

Making the purchase tomorrow so I'm anxiously trying to find the right ring before I settle.

Thanks

PS.. I'm in the UK.

Do both stones come with certificates? If so, can you post the details from each? That would make it easier for everyone to give you feedback based on a like-for-like comparison.

Which online jeweller are you looking at?

Yes the online one comes with a GIA cert. I'm looking at a company called Cool Diamonds who have a webiste (www.cooldiamonds.com) and also a showroom in London which I'm going to visit today to take a look. The details of it are:

There's also this one which scores better on HCA and is bigger (although more expensive, I could try to haggle!)... not sure what to make of the comments at the bottom of the cert though:

I prefer the numbers of the Tiffany stone to the last one posted. If I were given that choice, I would definitely go for the Tiffany ring! I like the stone better and it's an original Tiffany - not much better than that!

Even vs the 1.34 stone?

Sorry - did not see the 1.34 stone. I like the numbers on it as well although it's a 60/60 stone. Should be a nice, white bright stone! It is larger than the Tiffany and in a way that I think you would see a difference in size.

That's a tough choice - how would it compare in price after setting to the Tiffany stone? In this instance, it might come down to a choice between dollars and cents!

It's £700 more expensive (thats around $1100). Would take me to the top end of the budget but it's achievable.

The 1.34 is from where? Would that cost less than the 1.2 H VS2 from Tiffany?

It's from Cool Diamonds. A UK website with a showroom. I still haven't seen in yet.

It would come in cheaper than the 1.2ct Tiffany one... The 1.2ct Tiffany is on at £12.1k and this is on at £10.8k... Tiffany there's no chance of haggling whereas with Cool Diamonds maybe there is (i don't know).

Decisions decisions. I'm leaning towards the Tiffany one. The guy has now sent me though pics of it (see below) and it does look good. My gut is the different in price for the brand isn't as huge as I'd expected. I would of course like a bigger stone but the reassurance of quality with Tiffany is just as important.

Getting close to decision time now.

It is so beautiful - I don't blame you for leaning that way! I could understand going in the other direction too for a larger stone so it's a real hard call.

I guess at this point it just comes down to personal preference. Would she be over the moon thrilled with a ring from Tiffany's or would it matter to her?

Is that the 1.11 from Tiffany? I don't know but unless the Tiffany brand means a lot to her, there is a pretty big difference between a 1.11 and a 1.34. So much depends on her comfort level and what people close to her wear, though. My understanding is that e-ring stones are generally smaller in the UK than they are here. So 1.11 probably is considered large.

I'm pretty sure she'll be delighted with both. She'll be hugely thrilled to have a Tiffany ring for sure. She loves Tiffany and I've already bought her the Tiffany heart necklace in the past. She made a passing comment a few months ago that she 'had gone off Tiffany' as one of our friends has got their e-ring from there but to be honest I don't know if she was just saying that she didn't mind if I didn't get her a Tiffany ring because of the expense.

Meanwhile I'm of the view the bigger the better. But I'm a guy and love value for money. My main concern is if the Tiffany ring is going to be too small. I have no idea what friends or colleagues have and to be honest never paid enough attention to know what size of diamond anyone wears is (unless it's tiny). She has slim fingers but I'm pretty sure there're prob a bit bigger than the standard Tiffany size 6.

Well, I totally understand that guys do not notice other people's rings! I am sure my husband probably couldn't tell you the size of the diamond I currently wear!

You do need to know her ring size, though. If she has slim fingers, I do not necessarily think it would be above a 6. You just can't guess her ring size. If she is not sure of her current size, she needs to go to a jeweler and get her finger sized.
