The Kelsey Lake diamond mine in northern Colorado was a financial disaster but it's the only commercial diamond ever attempted in the US. It opened in 1996 and closed in 2001. It was a tiny blip in the diamond world but it held big hopes for Colorado.
Up for auction in about a week is the largest stone they ever produced. As far as I can tell it's still the largest polished diamond ever produced in North America.
