it must have been good if these two are going to craft it for a more western audience:

Spielberg, Smith in talks for 'Oldboy'
Pair may kidnap remake of Korean drama
By MICHAEL FLEMING

Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are in early discussions to collaborate on a remake of Chan Wook-park's "Oldboy." DreamWorks is in the process of securing the remake rights, and the new pic will be distributed by Universal.
In the 2003 Korean original, a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he's released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge.

Spielberg had been looking for an opportunity to make a film with Smith, who would play the kidnapped man if all the pieces fall into place. Spielberg is looking for a writer to begin the development process.

The film was originally set at U and then found its way to Mandate

i just hope they don't screw it up! eta: spielberg did a great job of westernizing INFERNAL AFFAIRS when he made THE DEPARTED.

oh no! i read this and just thought
"uh.. really?"
I dont even like old boy that much. but, i cannot see will smith in this role. however if he does pull it off i guess no one could really doubt his acting!!

my bad: it was scorcese that did The Departed......

i''m afraid spielberg is going to mess this one up......its one to to westernize and another to sanitize....

ps: see my quote tag as its from the director of Old Boy.

Could be interesting, though I think it would pale in comparison to the original. I already think the original, in addition to the plot-twisting story line, was filmed in such a fantastic fashion that it will be hard to live up to.

The whole vengeance trilogy was very interesting, though I think Oldboy was the best of them.

I don''t have a lot of faith in Wil Smith playing that role. I really hope it doesn''t get screwed up.

Hmmm... I haven''t been impressed with American re-makes of Asian movies so far. I mean, The Grudge??? Seriously!
But maybe Will Smith will do OldBoy justice. I love that movie!

i just don''t see smith in the role....

THE DEPARTED is the best i''ve seen for a remake. the original INFERNAL AFFAIRS is a trilogy. but scorcese did a good job of folding them into one, keeping the edge, and making it accessible to western audiences....yet i recognized entirely the original.

i''m betting OLDBOY gets mangled.......

ps i saw the original BANGKOK DANGEROUS that the pang brothers from thailand did some years ago. they also directed the one that was out this summer but westernized and starring nick cage.....i didn''t see it because the previews showed the original had been so changed that i knew i wouldn''t enjoy it. the original was based on a true story......the previews for the hollywood remake made it clear that all that had been lost.
