For jewelers about prong height

Hey, I have a question for any jewelers that might know. If you have a particular shank and are using the same style of head would their be a height difference between .50 ct, .63ct, .75ct, and 1ct prong heads. Or would they all be the same size but of different widths to accommodate the larger diamonds?

(I am trying to decide if the setting I am selecting allow for the cult and the tapered sides to line up, or if it will sit lower than in the picture and thus hide the culet. For those interested Tapered top Where we see that the 4mm diamond is suggesting that the taper rises up just shy of 4mm, and that there is a slight overlap between the taper and the diamond, thus hiding the culet. Thus if the prongs were the same height with a smaller diamond it would be perfect, but with a lower prong height it would essentially bury the diamond into the taper--which would be horrible for me.)

As Mrs S suggested, call Knox and ask so you''ll know for sure.

My guess is Yes, the prong height will vary according to the size of the stone.

Just thinking about the depths of the different carat weights you''ve posted.

As an example in RB''s:

.5 carat is gonna range 3.1-3.2 mm in depth.
.63 carat is gonna run around 3.4 mm in depth.
.75 carat is gonna run around 3.6 mm in depth.
1 carat will run about 3.95-4 mm in depth.

This would lead me to believe a 1 carat stone would sit up a bit higher than a .5 carat just based on depth.

To get a lower set stone, look for a setting/ring that brings the culet of the stone down into a hole in the shank of the ring.

Well, I did ask knox and they told me that they don''t know but that the diamond in the picture is 4mm deep so I can guage the depth by that. They sent me an email later telling me that they don''t know the height of the .50 ct platinum head.

Also, I know the depths of the stones at different ct ranges, what I was wondering was if the heads themselves were designed to be 1mm longer for every 1mm larger stone. Say, if the prongs for the .50 ct went 5mm from the base of the head to the top of the prong then the 1ct would be 6mm from the base to the top.


Because if I look at the picture of the ring and I take away 1mm from the depth of the diamond in that picture to adjust for my diamond, then it would be perfect--becaues I do not want my diamond to set inside the ring, I want that little beauty on display.

But if the prongs are lower than the one in the picture then I might have a problem on my hands...and for some reason knox could not get that exact information, nor the exact width of the band when I asked. I am a bit concerned at this point as it really is the prettiest one I can afford as long as it holds the stone out on display well.

I would just trust the diamond setter to do it corrrectly. if you want the diamond as low as possible say so and they''ll do. Jus the same, if you want it as high as possible, I''m sure they can accomodate that request as well as long as it''s safe for the stone to do so. I wouldn''t worry about 1mm...

Well, incase anyone is wondering as I was I went into the mall today and decided to see if they could help me with this. I found one place that had a mm guage and they let me measure the height.

It turned out that in the classic tiffany four prong the prong height increased 1mm between .50ct prong size and 1ct prong size for a total of 8mm height in the 1ct prong size. However, the height between the 1/2ct prongs, 5/8 prongs and 3/4 prongs were all the same, with varying widths of course. It is then at the 1ct mark that the prongs are increased in height.

Also, for anyone that might read this and advise me in the next day or two I will put my calculations down.

I measured the picture in the above link and it came out to be that the diamond at 4mm=1.4CM

the height from the finger or top interior of the ring to the table of the diamond is 2.4CM

Which means that the total height of this setting off the finger with 1ct diamond is 6.86mm

I measured the taper as well as I could and I found that it rises up to 1.2Cm which converts into 3.43mm.

Thus, if I reduce the total height of the ring by 1mm to account for the .50Ct prongs I get 5.86mm-3.43mm=2.43 of the diamond above the taper of the ring.

My diamond is 3.35mm Deep which means that .92mm of the diamond will be covered by the shoulder.

Thus If I want it to be totally out I might need to go for the .75Ct prongs and have it thinned out a little bit and raise the diamond up ever so slightly so as to keep less of the diamond covered. If i get the .50ct prongs then it might require it to be widened out a little bit and make a full 1mm or even slightly more than that brought under the shoulder. Lets hope that James Allen doesn''t think my requesting them to thin out the .75 prongs and keep the diamond up right around the top of the shoulder is too much on the .75ct prongs! (though I think it may be, in which case I am not sure what I will do.) Either way it should be substantially lower than the classic tiffany! which will be great for her comfort I think! If i made a mistake let me know.

I would have thought the salesperson could have asked a benchman to put a stock diamond around the size of yours into the empty setting and see where it stands regarding the culet and if possible send you a picture.
