Seems I`m seeing quite a bit of interest in emerald cut stones lately.

Lots of posts of emerald stone seekers or new owners of them.

They are beautiful I must admit and they are growing on me very much so...

To discuss:

Why is there this increase in attention to emerald cut stones?
Price?
Availability?
Fad? (I know they`re classics but I`m seeing so many around - here anyways)
Trend?
Better ones being cut?
etc...

But again, mabye I`m wrong and they`ve had their place here and in the real world for a long time and I`ve just never paid close attention to them until now... I really haven`t been around that long you know.

I`m really just thinking out loud here but it`s dull as ditchwater thinking alone.

I think that we have been seeing more in the way of EC''s recently. To me, they have always been a classic shape, we have some members who are long term EC wearers, and now perhaps with the growth of online diamond purchasing, vendors providing photos and images to aid cut judgement, and of course the stunning pics provided by some of our EC wearing ladies, folk are realising how fabulous these shapes can be!

Terrific points!

Also, think people may be growing tired of the popular ideal RB? There are hundreds around here (I know it`s not true for the general public but here at PS...) and people are looking for something different and less commonplace? Please, don`t get me wrong, I`m not knocking the ideal RB at all! I love them still, I`m just continuing my discussion (with myself and now with friends! Hurray!)

Thanks Lorelei for your views!

LOL - I know what you mean! I will always have time for a nice EC, even though I always seem to buy rounds! I also don''t think that even many stores carry them, so for those of us on PS, we get inside knowledge as to how gorgeous these diamonds can be. Also photography has come such a long way, now with modern cameras and the knowledge of how to get good bling pics spreading, more PSers are able to post their EC''S which gets many drooling! It is great isn''t it, how things have progressed and the options we now have, wouldn''t have thought it possible just a few short years ago!

Heh. Great Question! I've noticed that as well, and I'm most certainly HAPPY about it! Although, compared to RB's, it's still really not many at all...

I've chalked it up to GemALLogist's super-excited thread about ECs that got everyone's attention - maybe got some people out of lurkdom to show off...or perhaps even inspired a few others to look at ECs (one could only hope)!

I've read that EC's are historically the most popular cut, second to rounds of course (although I imagine in recent years the princess cut has eclipsed it) so they're probably not as uncommon as you may think.

Lots and lots of people on this site have not quite "knocked" ECs, but at the very least minimized their apparent beauty with terms such as "not a brilliant or bright cut," because RBs are so much more popular and accepted as a "beautiful, eyecatching stone." And obviously to many people, this is absolute truth.

But perhaps the recent popularity influx of asscher cut diamonds has reignited our love affair with the step cut in general, including the beloved EC.

I actually didn''t like EC''s when I was ring-shopping because I didn''t think they had enough sparkle. Compared to an RB, they looked so boring! Until I got to try on one worth 20k at Zales...and then I was hooked. They are just so classy, timeless, and they look AMAZING with halos. Actually...they just kind of look amazing.

Monkeypie, you said exactly everything that I was going to say... I tried on a 14K one at a local jeweler and fell in love. They are classy and I feel as though since they are not as blingy, you can match them with more everyday stuff, but make that diamond shape match with anything dressy. Does that make any sense? I just love them more and more the more pictures I look at on PS.

I tried on a 6 ct (or something gigantic like that) EC a few months ago and was stunned at how gorgeous it was. Ever since I have been eyeballing EC tanzanites. I too thought they didn''t sparkle enough for me but they are certainly a very classic and classy gemstone or diamond.
