I want to send my prayers and lots of PS *DUST* to the miners who are stuck in a collapsed mine in Chile. There perspective rescue won't happen until CHRISTMAS!!! I truly pray that they are able to make it!!!

i'm greatly impressed with how things are being handled down there: NASA has been consulted re exercise in small/tight spaces. the miners themselves range in age from 19 to 63 and the older ones have basically taken charge and set up a "command" system. they lived on "rations" every other day in order to survive. psychologists have been brought in and are working with them. games and cards sent down. family included in the work to keep the miners mentally and physically fit. all in all very impressive response to a very bad situation. i think these guys have the strength and will to do this....and will succeed.

ps and apparently this mine had past problems.....this present situation is being used to closely examine other mines in Chile.

Hmm...

I would have thought that if they can send cards/games in, air, food and water is no longer a problem?

I heard that on the news this morning and it shocked me that it would take so long. I didn't catch the whole story though. Why will the rescue take so long? How on earth will the miners survive? I know a camera was lowered into the mine. Is that how the miners will get food until they're rescued? I'm so glad they're okay now, at least.

I care a lot, and am praying for them and their families and loved ones. I pray they make it.. How are they getting food and water to them?? I am behind on all of this. I hear they are in good spirits, that's great. How much living space do they have?
They are brave that's for sure, I'd be freaking out...

Anything we can do to help?? :read:

I am DeFINITELY sending dust and prayers--I cannot IMAGINE being in that situation....their families must be FRANTIC.

I've been reading a lot about this too. I am astonished and amazed by the true abilities of people. I am awestruck by those who've taken leadership roles in such a terrible circumstance.

From what I've read, they need to lose weight to fit through an escape opening. Is this accurate??

the shaft is like a cork screw and the area they're in is considered "safe"....with side shoots in which they can exercise. they have been able to get more food to them as well as the games to occupy their time. a lot of their survival now depends on their mind and mindset. they've managed to send down pictures to them as well showing them the "safe" exercise areas and what exercises NASA said were most useful. originally, they survived on food every other day.......there was a stash of supplies in that area. i believe now they can eat each day as the supplies are coming through...slowly but coming throuh.

ps PBS has done some great reporting on this. not sure how well i'd do in these circumstances.

eta: or not GAIN weight.....the exercise is really necessary for many reasons!

I'm praying for them too. I can't even imagine what they're feeling. I hope they keep their upbeat attitudes. Have they been told how long it will take?

As I understand it, they have something like 600 square feet of living space. They have set up separate spaces for toilets, cooking, living quarters, etc... They are being instructed on how to "stay fit"... The opening that they will eventually have to crawl out of is 26" in diameter. Air quality is a problem and its really hot down there...

I'm really not trying to be dense here, but why could it take til Christmas to get the miners out? Thanks, MZ, for explaining that the mine shaft is like a corkscrew and the area they're in is considered safe. Is it going to take so long because they need to plan a safe route for rescuing the miners, so to speak? I'm sorry if I'm missing something.

I'm praying for them too, and really hope they can make it. I also don't understand why it's taking so long?

I don't really understand it either... I guess it takes a long time to drill down there. They have to make a whole new shaft. Perhaps they are using the same technique as they used to drill the relief wells for the oil spill in the gulf...

They are in my thoughts and prayers, along with their families.

I come from a long line of coal miners - several generations, as far back as I can trace. My grandparents spoke of mining disasters in their communities and dramatic rescues. I pray that this one has a good outcome, as soon as possible.

My understaning is that they are 700 meters below the surface and the material that they have to drill through is like granite. They have had to expand the size of the hole that they were originally going to drill because some of the workers were not going to be able to fit through the smaller hole. I'm guessing another reason they would take so long to drill is because they will have to be careful of collapsing the ground on top of them. Drilling too hard/ too fast could lead to people being killed.

They will be in my thoughts until they are out. I hope every one of them is returned safely to their families.

It's a terrible situation. My thoughts are with them and their families.

Wow...in my thoughts as well.

Thanks for letting me know, Tuckins and HOT. I hope the miners will be rescued safely.

I'm following the story with great interest and hope that the world will keep these miners in their hearts (prayers, minds, whatever you choose) once the story loses the front page headlines.

These brave men and their families have a heck of a trial ahead of them.

Some really good news today - 21 of the trapped men have been rescued so far, the operation is continuing.

The courage these men have shown is truly remarkable. I am watching the rescue and am thrilled at every man who is lifted to freedom.

Are you tearing up every time someone gets pulled up? I am a blubbering mess.

I haven't gotten to watch them coming out, but every time I hear of another I get so excited!

Yes! I am feeling really emotional. Its inspiring how much they relied on their faith while they were down there. I don't know if I could be so brave.

Everyone has worked together to save these people. I hope they all receive the blessings they deserve!

So glad someone dug this thread up! It's really exciting to me that they were able to get these men out of that mine a full 2 months earlier than they had originally expected.
