Do you know anyone who thinks this?

I do now, and I was surprised.
I had never heard about this concern.

He''s not talking about heating food on Styrofoam or plastics that may leech toxins.
He''s even concerned about water heated in pyrex glass.
He thinks something about microwaving food or drink makes it unhealthy.

Do you think this or know anyone who does?

I have to admit I''m slightly skeptical. If standing in front of it while it''s running can cause problems.... then nuking food in it?

I like to cook.

Pretty much the only thing I use my microwave for is if I need fast baked potatoes, I want to melt cheese quick, or I want instant oatmeal.

I don''t eat a lot of "Microwave" foods... save boca burgers which is not very common.

Yes please.

I''ve heard this before too...I thought the concern was due to how the molecules in the food are sped up, creating the heat which cooks the food. Perhaps this changes the food chemistry and makes it toxic? Our microwave broke a year ago and I never replaced it. I never really used it to ''cook'' - not for fear of nuked food - I mainly used it heat things up...but I don''t miss it at all.

I''d like to see the link too!

I don't know anyone except my grandpa who believes this (and he passed away years ago).

But then, most of my friends are engineers and know how microwaves work - they're not concerned.

eta: I only use my microwave for heating leftovers and melting butter - but not because it's hazardous, just because I enjoy cooking on the stove.

I didn''t have a particular link.
It was just something a friend said, but . . .

Just google this and lots of stuff comes up.

Microwaving food is fine - the microwaves cause water and fat molecules to move faster, thus heating the food. Microwaves are safe

Microwaves are a type of non-ionizing radiation - They do not contain enough energy to directly cause protons, neutrons or electrons to break away from their parent atom/molecule, unlike nuclear radiation which is ionizing (and therefore unsafe).

Many Wireless routers work on the microwave spectrum too (!).

Frozen foods designed to be cooked in the microwave are bad for you. To preserve flavour and prevent freezer burn extra fat and salt, and artificial flavours are put in ready-made microwaveable foods ( I'm looking at you pizza pops, hotpockets, hungryman tv dinners, and lean cuisines).

People have been eating microwaved food for over 30 years and have survived just fine

I know people who are anti-microwave, but they don't have a very good grasp of science. I respect their decision to live microwave-free.

My parents are microwave-phobes, and they are also health nuts...make their own bread from unbleached flour etc etc. I have heard the same words come from their mouths, and they totally disapprove of microwave use. As I''m "getting older" and more health conscious, I do find myself using the microwave less and less. I use saucepans to reheat soup, other things I pan fry or put in the toaster oven or I steam in my rice cooker.

It does seem that cancer rate is on the increase, and even though it may not be caused by microwaves alone, it''s better to be safe than sorry right?

This.......but then as the food cools, the molecules slow, and return back to its original state.......its basically the same concept of having an MRI done, except that''s done with radio waves. Different frequency. It makes our bodies'' molecules spin, and as they reach a certain point and then slow down, the frequencies generate different densities, thus creating an image of our body, from the outside in. No cancer there!

My sister avoids the microwave. I mean, it is kinda weird, I think. Sometimes I thing about all the sickness you hear about now vs years ago. I mean, when I was growing up, there weren''t any kids with cancer in my school. Now I hear of kids in school with at least one sick child in each grade. To me, something is causing this. Is it microwaves? Is it processed foods? I dunno. I''m not trying to start a debate. I just ponder these things.

If microwaves were unsafe I wouldn''t have made it past my childhood. We ate weird hippie vegetarian food, and most of it was reheated in the microwave for days.

I don''t really use my microwave now, but not because it''s unsafe. I just don''t make any foods that require a microwazve.

It never ceases to amaze me that people are too scared to use their microwaves for fear of the radiation, ill health effects etc and don''t give it a second thought when they spend half the day with their mobile phones glued to their ears?!?! WTH?!

This post isn''t directed at any of the posters here BTW, I just know some people like this.

And it''s basic physics anyway - the molecules move faster when they are heated, no matter what energy is used to heat them!

... Then we should also be concerned about cell phones frying our brains when we talk as well!

ETA: Oops, I didn't read the post above mine - we think alike i guess :)

well, my dad''s 56 years old, and his mom ONLY used a microwave. i''m not kidding- my grandmother can cook ANYTHING in a microwave.

I don''t necessarily ''think'' this, but I do wonder....

DH and I do not own a microwave, and never have had a use for one really. I will occasionally nuke food at work in the microwave, but that''s a pretty rare occasion.

I have not given it much thought, seriously anyway. Our microwave broke 3 years ago and we never bought a new one. I have 3 young kids, and really haven''t ever felt inconvenienced by not having one. I do often joke when people ask how we can stand not having one...I reply "They will one day find that they are unsafe, and we will be just fine".

Ditto this. I would be dead already - I can cook anything in the microwave.

Microwaves are essential! How else would I heat up my leftovers for lunch at work?

We get radiation from an awful lot of things nowadays - sadly, it is probably these and a combination of toxins, pollution, medications, and processed foods that contribute to illnesses. Maybe it does have an effect - but I''m still not giving up the microwave.

I do have a friend who doesn''t use one because of paranoia. I know how they work so don''t have any problem with them, although I try to avoid them just because things taste better when they are really cooked.

I''m really not concerned about them but even if I was they''d rank pretty freaking low on the list of things that are slowly killing us.

I couldn''t live without my microwave!!
