Hello all, my first post here. I have a classic newbie question. I couldn''t find any answers in the search so here I go...

I was looking at some stones in one of those private viewing rooms. It had fluorescent and incandescent lights on two different switches. I took the opportunity to look at the diamonds in the two different lighting conditions. Under mixed light, bright white and sparkly. Under incandescent only, very sparkly good contrast. Under fluorescent lighting, dead, totally flat I mean nothing. Is this normal?

The diamonds in question were 1.2-1.3 ct, F&G, and GIA cert, so no crown or pavillion info.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. These diamonds were priced well below anything I saw on the internet, but at a very well respected independent jewelry store known for high end items.

nope its not normal they werent well cut.

I retract that its normal for the average not well cut diamond not normal for a
well cut diamond.

Thanks, I didn't think it was normal considering I had just looked at other diamonds that, although I couldn't get fluorescent only light on them, showed excellent brilliance even in a shadow. What surprised me the most was the sales tactic that was used. Quite to opposite of what I expected. The first diamond I looked at was a 1.1 F VS2 at under $5K, well below prices I'd seen in eiter B&M or online for similar stones. After we'd looked at several stones in different sizes, up to 1.25 ct, all supposedly "ideal cuts" (as I requested), VG and EX for sym and polish, I mentioned that the pricing seemed low (I know, stupid right?) but his counter was, "Why spend more? Do you really think she will be able to tell the difference?" I appreciate the honesty I guess, but at the same time I was a little suprised that he didn't take any effort to "educate" the buyer on the more difficult aspects of buying a diamond.

Now keep in mind this is not the Maul store, this is a very large independent jeweler with a store in Boston's Diamond building as well as 2 other locations. The store I went to is two floors and has many pieces with price tags approaching if not over 6 figures. I was expecting a full court push to settle for nothing less than a E or F H&A certified blah, blah, blah name brand. When I asked the salesperson how he ranked the 4 C's, his answer was Color, Clarity, Carot, Cut (not surprising cut is last, is it?).

Oh, and when I say not a hint of sparkle I mean nothing, nada, zip, zilch. Only "colors" I saw were white, grey, and black. It was like looking at a piece of glass only more dull if that's possible, ok maybe a piece of really clear plastic. All 3 stones were exactly the same, that's why I had to ask if it was normal.

Nope not suprising in the least.
Sounds like a bunch of yucky diamonds.
If they were that discounted I wonder if they were clarity enhanced.
