Hi,

I posted last week about choosing between two stones for my engagement ring and after a third viewing my boyfriend and I choose a 1.86 Princess of Hearts. The stone has been my absolute favourite out of all the stones we have looked at and we were so excited, until about 5 minutes ago when the copy of the AGS certificate popped into my email.
It has been graded as a strong blue fluorescence.. I''m sure I inquired about this initially and I really don''t know what to do!
I just love this stone and it''s fire and sparkle have been unmatched but this attribute is so confusing to us.. there appear to be very different opinions about fluorescence and we''re stuck.

We are both quite concerned, do we have good reason to be or do the other specs. make it ok?

The stone has passed the most important test - how it looks to you. It sounds as if you have found a great stone.

Fluorescence is often shunned, but in most cases, it makes little difference.
In a few instances, strong fluor can make a stone turn hazy and lose some transparency. Most of the times that it is exposed to ultraviolet, it makes the stone have a slight blue-lilac tint.
In stones below G colour, the slight blue tint is considered to help them "face-up" whiter. But since fluor can only normally be seen in strong light, you''ll often find that the white light reflections of a well cut stone will mask the fluor, just as a well cut stone can conceal a yellowish body colour.
You might want to double-check that in sunlight it doesn''t turn cloudy, or suffer some other optical unpleasantness. But I don''t think that you need to worry too much.

Fluorescence is not a problem as long as it does not result in an oily/hazy appearance. That only happens to a very small proportion of SB/VSB stones.

Can you post the report number?

The report number is 0010206401.

I have been scrambling online to read as much as I can in the last 1/2 hr..we did take the stone outside and it was a cloudy day. There wasn''t much sparkle to be seen but it certainly didn''t appear cloudy at all.
I''ll try to post some pictures if I can figure out the resizing!
I have read through similar threads and appreciate the input on a much asked about subject. We want to be sure that what we are ''loving'' about the diamond isn''t actually a flaw or bad characteristic that we are wrongly interpreting as ''beautiful''..does that make sense?

Outdoors on a cloudy day; look at the stone from an angle - to try to minimise the amount of white light being reflected back at you. You should then notice a slight blue-lilac tint, although you may also see a slight yellow tint from the stone''s body colour (I). You might find that these two colours (blue and yellow) partially neutralise each other and appear almost white.

If the stone is one of the small number of nasty one''s, even without much direct sun, when taken outdoors in mid-day, it ought to turn slightly milky/oily/hazy/cloudy/turbid (choose a word!).

I think that you''ll be OK because I would have expected you to notice something strange. If the seller has a good returns policy, I wouldn''t worry about it at all. You could ask them to review the stone and see if it is one of the murky one''s.

There are several topics of fluorescence on here - including some pictures.

1.868 :)

I personally like fluorescence...as long as it doesn't make the stone milky it's a fun feature.

Here''s a pic of it ''sitting'' on a setting so I could see it on my finger. Does it look ok?

The report is AGS Diamond Quality Report which does not grade princess stone in cut performance, so probably not the best in cut.

Can you compare it with an AGS0 cut graded princess?

I compared it side by side to a GIA H VS1 princess and the POH seemed to have a lot more fire.. perhaps what I was seeing was fluorescence?
I''m sorry if I am using poor terminology.

OIC, it is a princess of heart. Ya, that's good then. :)

Enjoy your stone. :)

Really? So it''s ok?

My heart literally jumped when I read your post..would you mind explaining a little bit?

I am just concerned that our excitement about this stone''s ''characteristics'' maybe actual flaws easily seen by someone more knowledgeable.
Thank you again for your time

AGS only grades standard shapes, like princess, 57 facet round, so anything else not be graded with the cut performance.

POH is more a round cut than a princess, so comparing it with a round makes better sense. But make sure you compare it with an near tolk proportion cut. GIA Ex cut allows for some steep/deep proportion that results in leaky/dull stone.

EDT:
Also, as GIA do not grade princess in cut performance, you might be comparing with a bad princess cut.

Hmm...

GOG actually has POH with AGS0 cut grade for the more recent stones. So some of what I said previously is wrong. When is the report dated?

ok, saw the new stone dated May 2009. So you stone is in between, no point of reference. :P

sorry... meaning???

The newest stone I found is the one with the AGS0 cut grading. Older stones, without the cut grading is from a time before your stone''s report date. So your stone is probably graded before AGS or the cutter decide to use the cut grading on POH but cannot be sure.

Here''s another..

You loved the way it looked enough to choose it enthusiastically it over other diamonds, so don't worry about the cut. It's the right cut for you.

As for the fluorescence, I LOVE strong blue fluorescence. I wouldn't buy a diamond without it. It's probably helping your I color diamond look a little whiter, and you will probably never notice it except if you go to a nightclub with black lights, which will make it light up blue in a really cool way.

Congratulations on your engagement and enjoy your beautiful diamond!

Edited to add: Here's a photo of a strong blue fluorescent diamond doing its thing under a black light--really cool looking, I think:

Thank you..and I think my nightclub days are over so I should be OK.
It appears that there are a lot of SB fans on PS so I think I just had inadvertently become one

PoH are a branded cut and can be very beautiful, you have nothing to worry about!

Thanks everyone! I''ll go back to counting down the days for the ring to be finished.
I really appreciate the input and I''m sure my boyfriend will be relieved as well, I will be sure to post some pics!

I also have a princess of hearts - with strong florescence - and I absolutely love it! I''ve had it for just over 2 months - and everything about it is fabulous. It is brilliant in all the spotlights, clear and clean in sunlight or indoor florescent lighting, and even right now, in dim incandescent lighting, it is crystal clear.

I''ve seen other strong flor. stones that, in sunlight or with any indoor florescent lights look opaque and appear to have a film on the surface. Happily, my stone has none of those attributes, and I''d be surprised if yours does. On occasion, I can see an increased ''blue white'' light reflecting out of it, but that is the only effect I notice.

I hope you enjoy it! I adore my beauty!

Bye the bye - did you get your stone from Jon at GOG?
