fluorescence: good or bad?

Hi all,

I''''ve been lurking for quite a while, but only just registered as a member! I have a quick question: I read a lot on the forums about diamond fluorescence, and have been trying to find more info on the internet about it. Is it better to have a diamond that fluoresces than not?

Opinions vary as to whether fluorescence is desirable or not, many of us here at PS love it! Generally in the top colours such as D or E etc, med or strong can be considered to be a disadvantage, but in lower colours especially the warmer ones such as I J K and L etc it can be a good thing as many believe it can help a diamond to face up whiter. Rarely strong fluorescence can make a diamond look milky or oily in some lights but this is unusual. In my opinion fluoro adds interest to a diamond and makes it look more " plugged in" to quote another poster. Faint fluorescence may not be discernible anyway. It is a matter of personal taste as to whether you enjoy the effect or not, it really isn't a case of whether it is better to have a diamond with it or without, whatever is better for you or the wearer. Cut is the top priority when choosing a diamond, fluoro can be a nice plus or not - up to you

I will post a link of a medium fluorescence diamond in a minute plus another thread which may help. Also there is nothing like seeing the effects for yourself in person - a pic can only be a guide.

I am another fluorescence fan.

My F colored stone has it, and I adore it. My eyes are drawn to it.

it''s really something only your eyes can decide. Go check out a few with and without. Good luck!!

2 of my 11 stone half-eternity band have what I would think is strong blue flourescense - but I can''t see it at all unless it''s under a black light. The diamonds are all F-G in color. I found out it a funny way - I''m a nurse and I''m working for a company that does health screenings for insurance companies. Part of the service is doing skin screening of the face for sun damage with a black light surrounded by a curtain. I put my hand in there and the 1st and 3rd stone flouresced strongly! We''ve had some fun - one girl''s solitaire flouresced yellow-green, but under ordinary light it was not detectable.

Hello, Redd.....my 3 carat HOF has strong blue

and it''s a I color ( AGS ) I would never know it if it were not on my diamond grading report. I kind of wish it did "something" like jump out" blue" at me....but it just sits there on my finger....

I have medium blue in my ering and strong blue in my asscher. I love it. As long as it doesn''t make the stone appear cloudy or milky, you''re good to go. But as everything it''s a personal choice. Many here love it.

DITTO what Lorelei said!!! Typically on D thru G you wouldn''t want it, and on higher colors a little never hurt. It''s a personal thing for everyone, take a look for yourself, you might decide it doesn''t matter to you one way or the other. Good Luck!!

Other than the potential issues with strong blue florescence, you really can''t tell it''s there unless you spend time in rooms with black lights! I''ve had a F with medium blue for almost 30 years, and I have never seen the florescence. So to me, faint to medium floro. is a non-issue.
