Hello everyone,

So, after an extensive amount of research and narrowing results down, I may have come to a conclusion on a diamond. No matter how much looking and researching I do, I am not a diamond expert, and the doubt in the back of my mind is there. That is why I am asking you all! Please feel free to help a confused first timer by giving a little clarity on the whole situation.

Here's the diamond in particular that I have my eye on:

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-di...-color-vvs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-2680794

I checked the HCA score and it seems great (1.3), does not look to have any visible blemishes, and the color looks relatively clear. It seems to meet the criteria I had planned for (size, clarity, price range ($5,000-$6,000)), but I still wonder.

I don’t have many specific questions, I guess more all-encompassing ones. How does this diamond stand up to the price point? Are there areas I should be looking for different qualities, like lessening clarity and increasing color? If you have any other suggestions, or advice, or knowledge you wish to impart, please feel free to do so. And if this diamond isn’t of significant quality for the price range and you feel like linking another you think is, I am always open to suggestions. Anything to make the stress of picking out such an important step in my life just a little bit easier is appreciated.

Thanks greatly!

Troy

Very good one at a great price. If you are serious, ask the JA to hold the stone and requese the idealscope image.. Now.

I think that diamond looks great. I would drop to VS2 clarity and get a larger stone though. VVS is overkill.

EDIT: After looking around, I think you're lucky to find a VVS at that price, so great find!

you've really done a great job, very pretty stone. Way to go!! what setting are you looking at?

Beautiful stone! I think it's a great size and price - I also took a look at JA and didn't see anything better at the moment. I second others to place the stone on hold!

Stone is on hold per the suggestion of all here! Thanks for all the compliments and help, guess I did a better job than I was thinking! :)

As for the setting, don't have a 'set' one as of yet. Looking for either white gold or platinum, thin band, possibly pave or solitaire. Unsure on prongs, anyone have suggestions on 4 or 6?

Just echoing what others said, you have picked a lovely stone at a great price!

This stone will look awesome in the Jovyn setting! https://www.etsy.com/listing/230453061/the-cvb-id-jovyn-classic-six-prong

This is probably the only 6 prong setting that I would pick for this stone as the prongs are very delicate. Otherwise, I would select a 4 prong setting to let more of the diamond be visible and not cover it with prongs. Delicate pavè will also look nice.

Do you have a budget for the setting?

Yeah, I was more leaning towards the 4 prong as well, just feel like I like the 'basic' look of it more. Took a look at the others by CvB, and I do like the 'Heather' quite a bit.

The claw prong seems to give it some uniqueness, but also keeps it very low profile and basic.

I have mainly only been looking at the setting designs on James Allen as it has been my go-to search function. But one I do kinda like from them is:

https://www.jamesallen.com/engageme...e-edge-lotus-basket-engagement-ring-item-9307

I enjoy the unique lotus design, but I'm unsure if this will take too much away from the diamond?

As for a price range for the setting, I would like to keep it around the $750-$1500 range, but am negotiable.

The main other thing I am looking for input on is the metal for the setting. I know she prefers the white gold/platinum options, but is the price of platinum worth it over the price of 18k white gold or even 14k white gold? Thanks!

CvB designs are exquisite! Perhaps a Heather inspired setting with single prongs will be best for your stone. I would definitely reach out to Caysie to see what she thinks, she can always create something hung custom for you.

I would not do a pave knife edge, I find them bulky and uncomfortable. I would also prefer a more open basket. The color difference between F-G meleè and an I colored stone should not be extremely visible, but even if the meleè was H/I, meleè performs differently, as it produces more "white" sparkle and thus appears whiter. Regardless, I would not be co concerned, many folks here have I (and lower) colored stones set in pavè settings.

I really like that lotus basket design you've picked - it's not as open as the Heather but it's very pretty and it's still quite open which should allow for easy cleaning. Top down it's very clean and simple but the design from the side is neat.
I'd choose platinum if it's in your budget since it'll never need plating to stay silvery whereas WG can often need regular replating.

i really would discourage you from the pave knife edge unless she has specifically asked for it. I have it and love it but it is REALLY difficult to pair a wedding band with it unless you go with THE matching knife edge pave band.

This setting is REALLY beautiful, my favorite on JA right now. We've seen several PSers purchase this one recently

Otherwise i really love the CVB settings mentioned, her settings are so fluid and graceful!

Hi All,

Figured I'd update and say thank you for all the help, it was greatly appreciated! The diamond has been purchased and is in the process of production! :D

As for the setting, I vaguely remembered her mentioning one that she liked, and after some searching I happened to find it:

I ended up purchasing the one on JA that I thought resembled it the closest:

Just wanted to reach back out to everyone and say thanks one more time, you all definitely helped to put some of my worries to rest!

Excellent!! Please come back with pics! :appl:
