My little boy, JT, turned 4 on Sunday. He wanted a blue car cake. I made a 13x9 and cut off 1/3 of the long side. Then I cut that in half and used icing to put it together on top of the larger portion. I used one of DH''s model cars as a bit of a model to carve it a little. I iced it and used oreos for wheels. I think it turned out okay, but now I want to be able to make it a whole lot better. We have lots of bakers on here and I''m hoping for a few suggestions on improving!

I froze the cake before cutting it and crumb coated it immediately. This is the assembly...

This is from the front, it also has tail lights.

Sorry the pics are a bit small, I had a tough time sizing them....

There are ground effects, "chrome" around the doors, door handles, side mirrors, a grill and bumpers. Looks like you can't see them very much due to the size of pics.

this kind of cake making was so popular when i was a kid! my mother made me the most beautiful doll cake: real doll figure in the middle but the skirt was all cake and decorated like something out of Gone With the Wind..... car cakes, bunny cakes, and more.

congrats on a well done first attempt!

SS, that is SO cute! I think it turned out great!

Zoom Zoom...how fun! Great job!

You can make a birthday card...the invoice sticker. Hallmark has a NEW BABY invoice card. Quite adorable. How many miles to the crawl or something creative.

Or a stand up board with information like at a car show. Dale''s 39th Happy B Race, Ground pounding High Performance, Custom Paint by Something Shiny, 12 cylinders, famous for fastest lap time at Daytona or something yadda yadda yadda...etc etc..

Great Job!

Awww, super cute!!! Wait a minute, my niece and your son have the same birthday!!!! How funny is that!

Love the cake, you did a great job and I bet he was overwhelmed with joy! It makes me hungry!

Aw that looks great!

Great job!

Very Cute!

MZ~ I still make the bunny cake every Easter!

casablanca~ Thanks for the cute ideas!

Monnie~ I noticed in your hat thread that Heather has the same bday!

Thanks, porridge, purselover and rachel!

It was fun to make. I think I could make a template out of a model car and get a better shape. And, I''m thinking fondant would enable a really cool paint job. But, I''ve never used it!!

wow! nicely done!

Great job SS! Happy birthday to JT!

Thanks, jcrow and Zoe!

Happy birthday to your son, and what a cute cake! My cousin makes cakes, and she did one for my aunt that the car was on top of the cake, and I''m pretty sure she used rice crispie treat mix to mold the car, and then puts fondant on top.

Have you had the party yet?

packrat~ The rice krispies treats would be really easy to mold. You could make just about anything!! Yes, the party was Sunday, the cake has long since been demolished.

Do you make cool cakes like that often? I think my cousin just got started dinking around w/it a little bit and realized she had a knack for it, and holy cow the things she can do w/rice crispies, fondant and cake! Y''never know-this could turn out to be your *thing*!

Kewl Cake!

It looks like the headlights are flashing!

Packrat~ I do lots of cakes, but nothing really shaped before. I made my sis''s first wedding cake and it went over really well. It was 3 tiered square with fall flowers on it. Pretty simple, but it was good for her intimate outdoor wedding. I''ve made baptism cakes, birthday cakes, etc. But, I''ve only decorated the tops of those. I do like to do it. I would love to take a class actually.

mtjoya~ Thanks. The headlights (and tail lights) looked like that in person too. After I put on the icing I put water on my finger and smoothed it. That seems to have given it the "glow."

SS,
What a great cake. I am sure your son was very pleased. Great job Momma!!!!
