So I'll start off by saying that 3 weeks ago I had never looked at, considered, or even thought of for that matter, buying a diamond. After deciding that I was going to ask my girlfriend to marry me, I went to a local mall jewelry store to learn the basics and to see some stones in person. I was looking for a round brilliant diamond in the 1 carat range. I learned about the 4c's and saw that a 1 carat stone was in the 6-12k$ price range(at least it was at this mall store). I went home and proceeded to look at blue Nile online and quickly realized that the mall store was way overpriced. So I ended up buying a .96 carat I color stone that was gia excellent, etc. etc. (Gia - 216570163). As the stone was in route to me, I discovered pricescope and quickly realized gia excellent has a huge variance in parameters which when combined can yield less than ideal diamonds. I used the hca tool and came up with a score over 5. When I got the diamond it did not look like a quality diamond with respect to fire, sparkle, etc. I exchanged it for another stone (gia - 7163781508 1.02carat, 60 depth, 59 table, 33 crown, 41 pavilion) which scored a 1.1 on hca and excellent in all for categories on the hca test. I used the hca to weed out stones. I went with a J color stone with strong fluorescence. When I received the diamond, it was hands down the best that I had ever seen up to that point in my diamond search. The color when combined with the fluorescence looked nice and white with perfect clarity.
There really isn't a point to this besides me wanting to share my experience as a novice diamond buyer and how pricescope enabled me to obtain an awesome site unseen 1 carat diamond for under $5k.
