I know this is a subjective thing but this is what I decided on. How did I do with my first purchase I paid roughly $7000 including a $425 Six-Prong Solitaire Platinum Setting. This is going to be a suprise and I didn't know what size to get. I had her take her ring off that she just got fixed that was on her left pointer finger, I then tried it on my fingers and it pretty much only fit on my pinky. I then used a ring sizer to determine that my pinky is a 7.5 My girl friend is very small and has small hands does this sound like it will fit? How many size can rings be changed if it doesn't? Did I jump the gun to soon without enough information?

7.5 is on the large side of finger sizes, so that doesn't sound like her correct size, but maybe she has small hands compared to you and not compared to other women?

How much can they be resized?

For the basic six prong solitiare, probably as much as it needs to be, though within 2 sizes is usually recommended.

Hi Rex boy and welcome.

the average size for a women''s hand is a 6. if she''s small and has small hands I''d be worried that a 7.5 is going to be very big on her, if it''s a plain setting though they can size it pretty easily. We will also need the crown and pavilion angle''s of the stone. any particular reason you chose a VVS1?

Crown 34.9 Pavillion 40.7. I thought the closer to IF the better the diamond. I know this can''t be seen to the naked eye but I thought that the closer to being perfect the better the diamond would maintain or increase in value.

her left pointer finger

My "left pointer finger" is way bigger than my "ring finger." or finger that you would wear an ering on. I can''t even get my ering over my pointer finger knuckle.

I suspect this will be too big for her.

It only really matters if it''s a big stone, like 3+ cts, and then you''d probably want higher color, too. Supply is large for stones under 1 ct.

ooo, i missed that in the first post. I can't get my e-ring on my pointer finger either. my pointer finger is a couple sizes larger. I agree, it's going to be too big.

please also keep in mind that a diamond isn't an investment and doesn't appreciate like a house. it's only worth what someone will pay and if you go to resell your stone you're likely to loose money. Since it's a surprise it's hard to know what your GF would like in her stone, some value size over color or clarity others put them first. as for the cut, looks like it will be a beautiful stone.

Thanks for your quick replies. Maybe I will see if it not to late to change the size. Is it easier to downsize a ring or upsize it? I guess I am asking if I am better to buy it to0 big or too small not knowing her exact ring size.

I''d say it''s better to buy a bit big so she can at least try it on right away. It would be a bummer if you propose and she can''t even get the ring on her finger

MY jeweler told me Friday that it is easier to size up! So by all means call and change that size! I''d make it no larger than a 6, which is average, but if she is small, it may still be too big. A 7.5 may not be able to be sized very well if she is a size 4 or 5!

Good idea. I contacted them and waiting for a reply.

Honestly, I think the clarity was overkill. Clarity doesn''t really affect a diamond''s appreciation or depreciation. Some people prefer higher clarity, and some cultures even value higher color and clarity over size. That being said, most people will not be able to tell the difference between a D and an I when it is on your finger, and nobody will be able to tell the difference between a VVS1 and a VS2 in a stone under a carat when it''s on your finger. Additionally, it is probably not a good idea to think of a diamond as an investment. Unless you sell it to someone who doesn''t know anything about diamonds, you will never be able to get back what you paid for it (the minute you buy it, it becomes second-hand, and getting even 50% of what you paid can be tough). Personally, for $6500 I would want a stone over one carat like one of these:

1.04 G VS2 H&A

1.21 I VS2 H&A A Cut Above (PriceScope discount makes it $6580)

1.08 H VVS2 AGS0 ($6565 with PS discount)

Is this your diamond? Again, it seems like a great stone, but if I were buying from Blue Nile, I''d get something like this:
1.17 I SI1 Signature Ideal I/SI1 is my sweet spot for color and clarity.

Of course, not everyone is like me, so if you just can''t go that low, I''d get something like this 1.01 H VS2 Signature Ideal or this 1.10 G SI1 Signature Ideal.

You did get the most important thing right . . . cut! You can always double-check your stone''s cut on the Cut Adviser. I am sure the stone will be beautiful and that your girlfriend will be happy with it. However, if the idea of VVS1 being a good investment is out of the question, do you still want to make the trade-off and go for a smaller stone? That wouldn''t be my choice. If you''re a stickler for clarity, I would still recommend reducing it to VS1 or thereabouts. Many people on this forum have SI1 and SI2 stones that nobody can see a speck in, so again, it''s overkill. I''d rather spend the $ on something visible: color and/or size.

The cut on your stone is lovely, it should be a well-performing stone. Good luck with the proposal, and be sure to share some handshots when she says yes.

Yes that mine. I was thinking the small inclusion could effect the way it reflects and reflacts light thus effecting its beauty. They do have 45 day return policy from the time is ships so if she wants something different I hope she does get it. I know she will probably not want to hurt my feelings but I will not feel one bit hurt if she wants something bigger or clearer. I will share pictures and probably relate the proposal story on here when I get back. I called and had them change the size to a 5.5, it will delay it by a day but I will still get it in time. I think my ring size is a 7.5 and I know her hands are much smaller then mine.

rex..that was a great decision!!! I wear about a 5.5, and I think that is a pretty good guess from what you told us! Maybe you''ll be lucky and it''ll be perfect!

I just wanted to comment on one thing. You mentioned inclusions. Your stone is a VVS1. That means you cannot see the inclusions with a LOUPE!!! That means they are basically invisible..it''s almost perfect!!! Seriously, not many people get VVS1. It is rare and desirable. So please get that thought out of your head! You really don''t have to worry about VVS1, VVS2, or VS1. I can''t see any inclusions in my VS1 with a 10x loupe. Many SI1''s are nice and pretty clean, and most VS2''s are nice. Once you get to SI2, you do have to examine the stone more closely. But there are some people here who have found great ones!

ditto what diamondseeker said. Some people prefer a very high clarity stone for purity sake...but seriously, there are no visible inclusions in a VS2, and many SI stones are eye-clean...you can go waaaay down in clarity and either save a bunch of money or get a bigger stone.

I just wanted to add my 2 cents here -- I think you are a 4-star sweetheart and I really like how you said that you just want her to LOVE it, and if she doesn''t, no problem, you''ll return it for something she does love. Not all guys feel like that, and there are a lot of girls out there who are basically *stuck* with a diamond ring they had no input into, and simply do not love. And that, IMHO, is a darn shame. So - good for you!

I think if I were looking for a husband I''d ask you if you had any single brothers!!! What a great diamond and how nice that you want her to really love it. If she does decide to change it for a lower clarity/bigger diamond, or wants a different setting, you could always make receiving that one a romantic event.

By the way, it sure is sparkly!

Beautiful ring!!!!

I hope my ring turns out to be just as nice! Anyway how did the sizing of the ring go? I hope I did not reply too late. But there are other sizing charts besides the US ones and size 7.5 does not sounds like a small size for US sizes but for Jap sizes (at least that''s what Jim from JA said).

In Singapore here we use Jap sizes though...

Not sure yet. I will give it to here on tuesday. I been trying to determine if it right size as I hold her hand and I watch her hands.

Oh wow, I just got lucky as I was typing this I got a voice mail from her that she left her ring that she took of as she was brushing her teeth.

So I took pictures of the two side by side. I think is very close if not perfect.
