First thing you ever cooked or baked for your SO

Yeah, I'll show you romance.

Oh, and someone had died horribly elsewhere in the building that afternoon, so we were interrupted by the police crashing through the building looking for a suspect.

Wow - you put on quite the memorable evening, Jennifer!! I thought your story was awesome!

Lasagna. Unfortunately for him it was my first time cooking ever and the pasta sheets were still hard on the inside. He still ate it though as he was too embarrassed not to! Fortunately for him my cooking has gotten a lot better.

The first meal I really remember (though I'm sure I baked cookies or brownies early on) was a stuffed chicken recipe with roasted red peppers. What the side dishes were, I don't recall. I was 19 and still learning to cook, and when the grocery store in my super-tiny college town did not have a jar of roasted red peppers, I figured I could substitute using roasted red pepper flakes

My boyfriend, now DH, was so, so sweet that he choked down the meal and took leftovers home. Mine was inedible, so I know his was, too. It was like eating pure fire. I have since learned my lesson and have grown to be quite a cook (if I do say so :cheeky: ) I love cooking for DH and other friends and family. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy!

The first meal DH cooked for me was 2 weeks after we met. He made overcooked steak and tater tots. College boy. His cooking ability hasn't developed much since then, but I love him anyway ::)

That's a doozy!!! Makes for a funny story now! One of my friends had a similar experience. She tried to cook her bf a special dinner, but didn't know what a clove of garlic was--she put in 3 HEADS of garlic, and it was so garlicky it was inedible, but he choked it down.

I can't remember the first thing I cooked for him because I used to cook/bake a lot but I do remember the first meal he cooked for me. When we first started dating we rented a house with 2 other friends so it was hard to have nice dinners alone. So one night he was house-sitting for his parents and asked me if I wanted to come over there to eat. When I got there he had dinner all made and candles lit. He made salmon steaks with a honey-pineapple glaze, garlic mashed potatoes, and a spinach salad with some kind of raspberry-jalapeno dressing. I swear to you it was one of the best meals I've ever had. He cooked the same dinner for me on the night he proposed.

Ahhh, steak au poivre--a Julia Childs classic!!! Such a wonderful dish--he must have wanted to impress you! Did he make the cognac-cream pan sauce?

Thanks for your post! I asked him that and he said he didn't use Julia Childs' cookbook. He used another he grew up with. He thinks he made a... I forgot this part... pan sauce. But yeah, he wanted to impress me. LOL!

The first, was tempeh with peanut sauce. DH choked it down and acted like he loved it. A few years later he admitted that was the nastiest thing he had ever eaten (FYI it was delish!)

Shortly thereafter, I made it up to him though...with Gumbo...

I am a white girl from rural Pennsylvania who had never eaten or seen gumbo. He is a black man (now my DH) from southern Louisiana who grew up on gumbo...I did tons of research on recipes, spent a small fortune on ingredients, cooked a pot of gumbo, carried it all over Boston and the suburbs (the T, commuter rail, and bus) to give him a surprise birthday party a few months after we started dating. That he LOVED!!!

A white girl from rural pennsylvania makes Tempeh with peanut sauce as a first dish for a black man from louisiana?!?!? My mind is still reeling from the unlikeliness of this as a gastronomic adventure!

Tempeh is wonderfully delicious! What's not to like? Peanut sauce too!

We did a bunch of cooking way back when. But we cooked as a group in the dorm and I could hardly cook anything back in the day. Think the first thing was meant to be stew, but it came out as soup. She laughed so hard it was mean :blackeye:

But these days I do all the cooking, and the baking, and host family and friends.

So I still remind her about the times she was mean about my cooking.

Jennifer, your menu sounded divine. For a young person that date must have been completely unforgettable!

It's been over 6 years and I cook and bake a lot, so I really don't remember, but I would have to guess it was chocolate chip cookies because he loves my chocolate chip cookies (I use the recipe I got in my 8th grade home ec. class  ) and begs for me to make the all the time. In fact he gets mad when I make other, fancier desserts.

But I DO remember the first thing he ever made for me! It was actually a couple of weeks before we technically started "dating"; we were just hanging out as friends. Anyway I was having some friends over and it was my half-birthday and I had made a joke about needing some chocolate cake, and he brought over homemade chocolate cupcakes! I'm pretty sure his mom helped (a lot... he was 17 at the time. And he still doesn't bake at all.). I just thought it was the cutest thing. They were good, too. We made chocolate cupcakes together (aka I made then and he tried to put frosting on my face) a few months later. I think his understanding of my need for chocolate is a big part of why I married him :cheeky:

Neither I nor my SO remember the first thing I cooked for him :nono: , I cook a lot and we were part of the same group of friends before becoming a couple if that is any excuse.

I do however rember the first time his mother tried my cooking, and that is seriously a much more nerveracking experience . I am her younger sons first serious girlfriend and his older brothers only serious girlfriend was not a good cook. Meanwhile the mother prides herself on being great in the kitchen( which she is, her moose roast is to die for). They were helping us move and I wanted to make something that we could just heat up and eat when we got hungry, so I made a lasagna.

It was a tad awkward since her lasagna is not her best dish and mine is quite good. Her husband commented immediately in a surprised tone of voice that mine keeps together ( it is so compact that I can freeze portions in just some foil, no need for tupperware) since with hers the layers just kind of separates until it covers the whole plate. It tasted great too which is when she kind of realized that I am a good cook. After that (2 years ago) she won't make lasagna or pasta dishes if I am there for dinner :? .

Family recipe brownies - he and a friend (he was very generous to share) finished them off in a day

I don't really know how to cook or bake (but I am an awesome sous (asst) chef!) but my dh is an amazing chef and baker and the first thing I remember him baking for me when we were first dating were these yummy raspberry almond sticky bars. He baked them about a month after we started dating. So so good!

And the first meal he cooked for me was our first Valentine's Day together (3 months after our first date) and it was delicious and romantic. Butternut squash soup followed by pumpkin ravioli and homemade pumpkin cheesecake (hmmm, I see a theme here LOL- I love pumpkin cheesecake and pumpkin ravioli and butternut squash so he was making all my favorites at the time). It was so lovely and romantic and also the first time I stayed for the weekend at his apt in the city. (What can I say, I am an old fashioned girl LOL and we were taking it slow- I know 3 months seems an eternity for most people :cheeky: ).

Anyway, it was super special and romantic and I wouldn't have changed a thing.

I don't remember what the main dish was but I remember when we got married I made him some mashed potatoes... The ones from the box! I'm Asian and my mom never ever made mashed potatoes, and even tho I know now they are the easiest thing to make, I didn't have a clue back then. He took one bite and said it looks like potatoes... But it doesn't taste like potatoes.

Hello Gypsy!! Long time no see, how are you? First thing I made was spaghetti with chicken in it! :) I cooked it in his little summer dorm apartment on campus.

Meatloaf and except for the one slice I had, he ate the whole thing! I think it's because he hadn't had a home-cooked meal in forever. He claims he loves my meatloaf. I'll have to say it's improved over the years. Now I use half turkey and half beef and herbs from the garden.

I made "korean" chicken. I'm not sure how *korean* the recipe is actually, I'm filipino and got the recipe from my mom :) I met my husband when we were both 19 and in college. One of my roomates told me a friend asked her to make dinner for him and his roommate (my husband). I have no idea why I did this :)

I made the dish this past weekend tobring a party, and when my husband taste tested it, his words were "Will you marry me?" Nothing like fried foods to get to a man's heart.

This is a great idea for a thread! They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. It certainly was true in my case.

I'm okay sweetie, how are you doing. Long time no see indeed! :wavey:

I was 23 and made Vodka Penne Pasta.

I didn't know what shallots were so I used green onions. OH and did I mention I PUT THE WRONG END OF THE ONION IN? hehe I cut all of the green up and tossed the white parts out. I haven't made it since :naughty:

The first thing he made me was beef burritos. He defrosted meat from who-knows-when in the microwave, on high. It was TERRIBLE. I'm pretty sure he was trying to kill me. To this day, over 5.5 years later he still brings the burritos up- saying he shouldn't cook for us because "remember that time I tried to kill you?" lol I actually did get sick.

I'll bite! :naughty:

Last year for our first valentine's, I made broiled lamb...marinated in lemon, olive oil, garlic, and rosemary. I served it with some broccoli sprinkled with bacon and cheddar mashed potatoes. Then for dessert I made a white chocolate honey orange cheesecake! This dinner was definitely pulling out all the stops, I normally barely have time to make a simple pasta dish, much less a full multi-dish meal hehe. He definitely doesn't cook much...typical college boy who survives on ramen, tacos, and other easy meals hah. Sometimes he'll find some good deals on those grocery clearance sections with those preseasoned meats and we'll cook those!

I ended up cooking for my now husband chicken soup and lingonberry parfait for dessert on our second date. :D It was all from scratch. And he liked it.

Lingonberry parfait? That just makes me wonder where you are from :D . I have never had lingonberries in a dessert, just with food. Do you have the recipe?

He made me a steak! It was amazingly good! :cheeky:

But in typical bachelor fashion, he only had one steak knife, so we had to share it. We were pretty lucky to find a second fork. :D

All his chairs were lawn chairs, BTW. But he had a $1000 stereo.
