Yesterday I was in and out all day running errands. Around 2:30 as I was going out the hallway smelled like someone had burnt the grilled cheese they were making. This seemed especially likely since it was a chilly Saturday, and we have some new-ish neighbors who are young and seemingly without kitchen skills. A half hour later when I got back from some marketing there were three fire trucks in front of the building with the extension ladder deployed to our roof! The front door was open and there were fire fighters all over and hose going into the building. I raced up the stairs 4 flights to get to SO and Murry. They were watching tv completely oblivious. The fentanyl patch blocks an awful lot! The fire was in the apartment right next to us. we have two demising walls with them. They were not home. It seems that they left the stove on or accidentally turned on the burner as they were leaving. There is no gas in our building so we all have electric. I have induction but they had regular. the burner heated up and ignited "stuff" that was on the counter. The lady upstairs from them smelled it and called 911. The fire department was here very fast. They put the fire out. Had they not gotten here when they did the kitchen cabinets would have gone up. As it was, it never even got hot enough for the sprinkler to go off. No real property damage and no one was hurt, so there is much to be thankful for. There is a lingering smell of smoke, but I have been running air filters all night.

Thank goodness for the rapid response from the fire department! I'm glad no one was hurt!

BTW that sounds very like the scenario in which our kitchen once caught fire, when I was a kid... my mother had left something on the stove that caught fire while we were in church. The neighbors called the Fire Department and fortunately the damage was limited to the kitchen. It also sounds a lot like the fire in the apartment under mine when I first moved out on my own... the guy downstairs fell asleep while pan-frying something. The scary part of that story is that the fire engines were right below my window (second story in an old victorian building) and I slept right through the whole thing!

Woah! Really glad everyone is okay. How scary! We always worried about stuff like this happening when my grandparents lived alone in an apartment. My grandma had Alzheimer's and we were always scared she'd leave the gas on! I think everyone in the building was glad when my mom finally convinced them to move in with us. Phew.

Frightening! What a relief it was put out quickly & that you're all ok. I'm impressed with the fire dept! Hope your neighbors take this scary lesson to heart. Stay well!

Glad you, your SO and Murry were all ok --- that is WAY too close to home to take that kind of scare lightly. I hope you'll get a chance to speak to those neighbours - not that they won't be feeling terrible already - but hopefully they can install an extra smoke detector in their kitchen....

It seems that you are in a particularly vulnerable position with a partner that is on Fentanyl and house bound. I don't know if there is more that you can do to protect you and yours - does your SO have an emergency call button they can access? I don't know if that's a possibility, but the first thing that comes to mind is "Poor VL; he probably doubts whether he should leave them alone again..."

At least there are sprinklers. One apartment building I lived in had a kitchen fire (apartment underneath me, in fact) due to some wiring problem in the electric range itself. Filled up the whole building with smoke. Lucky for me, the local volunteer fire dept. was there without delay.


If you have tenant insurance, it should cover any cleanup or smoke removal service you may need.

Wow! How scary! Glad they were able to put it out and nobody was hurt. Things could have turned around in an instant.
