Fingers change size with temperature

I've sized myself multiple times at multiple places and found that temperature makes a HUGE difference.

I commissioned a ring with SK after measuring in NY once with his assistant and once with him proper both in fairly warm rooms (70+degree) I just received it this Friday and was delighted! Unfortunately, I spent my weekend in +100 weather and my ring felt like it barely fit and when I went back into a much more chilly area at night around 65 my ring flew off my hand during dancing because it was so loose.

I preemptively asked whether sizing beads made sense and he said that I don't have the knuckles for them.

Any suggestions?

I've listed my sizes and conditions where my fingers were measured.

I just had to post to say wow, it sure looks beautiful! Your sapphire is one of the best blurple/violets for sure and the ring looks stunning. No suggestions on fit, however, as I have the same problem unfortunately. But congratulations!

Your ring is beautiful. I have that same problem. I wear a 6 on my left hand and 6.5 on my right but then once I'm warm I need at least a size larger. I finally setttled on size 7 for both hands and that has worked well but yes I worry about losing them when it's cold.

My ring size changes in the hot weather, I usually go up almost a whole size . I hate it. I actually have rings that I wear in the cooler months and then rings that I wear in the warmer months, lol. But that said, when I want to wear my larger rings in cooler months, I pair them with a simple band that is in between my largest and smallest size. Doing that makes my "larger" ring stay on better when it would usually tend to slide off. I don't even have to put the larger ring as the "inside" ring, it's just the pressure of having two rings and the wider presence that will cause my finger to swell a bit, and then they both stay on. I hope that made sense, it sounds a bit odd trying to put it into words, lol.

I realize this probably isn't the type of advice you were probably looking for, I'm sorry I can't be more helpful. It's a frustrating problem to deal with and I sympathize!!

My finger will fluctuate .50 size b/t summer and winter. If I redo the ring ring I would go .25 size larger.

Gorgeous ring. I am sorry you have this problem and I have this same issue royalstarrynight. What is it about your knuckles that makes SK think you cannot do sizing beads? They work great for me and I have big knuckles and fingers that swell to one full size in the heat.

I recently had an OEC cluster ring made for me by Adam @oldworlddiamonds and his bench sized it up a full size and then added sizing beads and it works like a charm. And I also have sizing beads on another band and I am always comfortable wearing the ring even when my fingers swell. And it keeps the rings safe too because too loose is too risky IMO.

OK I just took a few photos to show you the sizing beads I just got on my OEC cluster. HRH Francesca got in on some of the photos. Hope you don't mind.






and lastly just put the ring on and my fingers are super swollen as it is very hot and humid in here this AM. I shut off the wall unit AC in the bedroom to give it a chance to rest as it is on much of the time now. Man I cannot wait to get back to our central AC at the shore house. Summer needs central AC! But this shows you even with my fingers swelling right now to a full size greater than usual the ring still fits both index and middle fingers of both hands. Just like I wanted it to.



Anyway hope this helps and please feel free to ask me any questions. I think this is a good option for those of us with swelling fingers. I looked into getting the band reshanked with the adjustable shank but it has to be sized for one size so it couldn't fit a range of fingers sizes unlike the sizing beads.

Minou, I've been having a hard time learning how to photograph details! I'm debating whether photographing through a loupe makes sense. My only camera is a iphone. Booooo... I really delighted about my ring other than this little part.

Marcy, I also have a difference between right and left hands of about half a size as well. *sigh* I never knew my fingers were this finicky. I usually wear a thin ring on my left middle finger but it usually doesn't have issues.

Katharath, I've debated whether having a thin holder ring would be helpful. But then I need to think about always having another ring. We'll see...

Dancing Fire, Bleh. No wonder my parents both lost their wedding rings at some point. That should had been an indication that my fingers go up or down.

Missy, He told me that sizing beads were for people with skinny fingers but large knuckles and that my knuckles were small. I have a lot of meat/fat on the base of my fingers, which actually does the shrinking and swelling.

Love how your kitty dropped in for the shoot! I've also looked at maybe horseshoe sizers? I don't know....I'll probably throw the question back to him...For me it was just nervous how I literally almost flung the ring across the room

The literal same thing happens to me! I got speed bumps. They are weird the first time you wear it but you get used to it pretty quick. In the summer, my fingers can swell into the space between the bumps but in the winter the bumps touching my skin keeps the ring from sliding off.

I have "cone shaped" fingers. My finger is just a triangle, fat at the base and tapering up to the top. But the bumps still totally work for me.

Right then and there I started research on ways to prevent that from happening. I have had horseshoe sizers put on most of my rings. My knuckles are a little bigger than my fingers but this works perfectly for me. They have the added perk of keeping the rings from spinning or tilting to the side.

I have cone shape fingers too! What are speed bumps? Are they like the ones Missy posted? Pics are super helpful!

Elle, how much larger do your rings have to be compared to your resting size to accommodate horseshoe sizers? Are they uncomfortable?

I love the Patrick the Starfish fingers.

Forgive my blurry pic. They are more like arches and I find them more comfortable than the balls because with the ball, it has a smaller area in contact with your finger and it can feel more pokey.

My ring fingers are a size 5. I think that my horseshoe sizers are made for 1/2 size less (so 4.5). I find them to be perfectly comfortable. The sizer flexes out to the edges of the ring, when I put them over my knuckle. They also adjust outward when my fingers are hot / swollen. I find them more comfortable than the little balls (however, those speed bumps don't look to bad). You can tell your jeweler what size for the horseshoe ring, I believe.

Right?! I love them. Most of the jewelers around where I live don't want to put them in and would rather do the sizing beads. This is comfortable and solves my problem prefectly.
