Hello everyone,

I will be proposing very soon in lovely Aruba. I'm in the hunt for the ring. I have saved $11K for this and need it to encompass the whole wedding set. I have done alot of reading up on diamonds over the past few months, and know most of the things I'm looking for.

Recently while shopping in the US we stopped at JARED, I was highly hesitant, but decided I really needed to judge more of what SHE wanted in the ring. The sales staff was obviously more than delighted to show us. Apparently their Peerless collection is the "precision cut". We had 2 stones out, a AGS 1.01ct Peerless(~$9,900?) and a IGI 1.45ct G/SI2 VG-cut VG-polish EX-sym(~$9000?). She would have preferred the 1.45ct over the 1.01ct peerless stone. I wasn't comfortable purchasing a stone rated by IGI and one that didn't have a full long report, and even though I've read about diamonds I've never REALLY looked at them.

Anyways - has anyone had experience with the Diamond Vault of Troy (Michigan, USA)? They have very good reviews, and apparently good prices almost comparable to online. They do have a website ( www.diamondvaultoftroy.com ) but reports aren't viewable to use the HCA tool. I do plan to go into the store, but will want to use the HCA tool also to make sure I don't wind up with a poor performer.

I'm now thinking of something in the 1.20-1.30ct, G-H, SI1-SI2, with GIA EXcut or AGS 0.

I think that you're on the right track. It's easy to get distracted by sales people when you're shopping at BM's, so stray strong and insist on only seeing GIA ex and AGS ideal. Take your smart phone with you so that you can run the numbers through the HCA (although AGS0's really don't require this since they have already been evaluated for light performance) and keep in mind that the HCA is only a rejection tool, not a selection tool, so just because a stone passes this first test, does not mean that it's a winner. You can find AGS0's that score below 2 on the HCA, but are gorgeous diamonds. Ask the vendor if they can take ideal scope or aset images for you. If not you can place the diamond on a red sheet of paper to evaluate leakage.

Are you determined to shop BM? We could make some suggestions for you if you weren't resistant to shopping online.

My resistance to online shopping has to do with shipping to Canada - and paying DUTIES at the border.

When I shipped a stone over the border the stones cost was $11000 US. I paid $500 in duty, not a huge amount. That was last month.

Enerchi posted that you just pay the regular taxes if you ship a finished ring/diamond combo - so you're not paying any more than you would at a local jeweler, plus you get more selection in the US. I purchased my diamond sight unseen from NY and I live in CA (used to live in Canada!) - I got a 30 day refund policy. I viewed the diamond, lived with it for a week and then sent it back to be set. Awesome service!

If you're spending that kinda money and want to see the diamonds in person, I think it's worth a cheapie NY or Texas flight and a $179 hotel room to see some PS approved vendors. :) Shopping from my living room was pretty darn awesome, though.

Have you thought about the kind of mounting to put the stone in? Did she express any particular taste in design? You might want to think about that for adding it into the budget besides just the center diamond.
