Recently I inherited a beautiful antique ring which needs some restoration. It is a round 8mm opal with 16 2.5 mm diamonds around it, set in what looks like 18K yellow gold scroll work. It is missing one of the diamonds and the opal is damaged. When taking it to a jewelry store, they told me the diamond was a rosette cut and nearly impossible to find. It is a beautiful ring and I want to restore it. Can anyone tell me where to find a rosette diamond of this size? (and also a high quality opal) I read all the posts from a year ago about rose cut diamonds but I don''t really know where to start.

I live in Phoenix. Thank you!

You may need a rose cut diamond. This is a diamond with only a few facets on top and a flat bottom. No doubt, there is a jeweler in Phoenix who would repair the ring, find you a selection of nice opals and have a contact for a rose cut. We might have a rose cut for a jeweler in our old inventories, so they could ask us if they just don''t have a source. Mike Goldstein, in NYC is a larger source of rose cuts and an active wholesaler to the trade. So find a willing jeweler and see how it goes.

Sometimes jewelers hesitate to wok on a really old rin because it is so worn out that you will not like the end product. Be realistic. It could be something that should no longer be repaired, but completely remade.

Thanks for the advice and the name of Michael Goldstein in NYC. The jeweler I took the ring to said it was in very good condition but since they are a "chain" store they are not allowed to take the risk of working on antique jewelry. I knew that but wanted to make sure the ring was authentic before I bothered an independant jeweler. I will start my search for a reputable jeweler than can help me. I appreciate your reply!
