Finally the fight against rape has some teeth

(CNN) -- South African Dr. Sonnet Ehlers was on call one night four decades ago when a devastated rape victim walked in. Her eyes were lifeless; she was like a breathing corpse.

"She looked at me and said, 'If only had teeth down there,'" recalled Ehlers, who was a 20-year-old medical researcher at the time. "I promised her I'd do something to help people like her one day."
Forty years later, Rape-aXe was born.

Ehlers is distributing the female condoms in the various South African cities where the World Cup soccer games are taking place.

The woman inserts the latex condom like a tampon. Jagged rows of teeth-like hooks line its inside and attach on a man's penis during penetration, Ehlers said.

Once it lodges, only a doctor can remove it -- a procedure Ehlers hopes will be done with authorities on standby to make an arrest.

Why is it being distributed in areas of SA where the world cup matches are? Is it just for the tourists? Or does world cup = more rape? There is alot of rape in South Africa in the first place so why not hand them out everywhere? It''s a good idea, badly implemented I think. It might give you a minute or two to flee while he screams in agony, but if he catches you, it''s all over.

Not to mention, if they can''t be re-used (like putting the same one in every day, well washed), then it isn''t going to help because who has that much money to buy so many? If they had that kind of cash they would likely leave the country and avoid the problem to begin with.

+1. I''ve heard the same concerns.

Is it debilitating enough to allow the victim time to run away? I suppose its not really possible to know. Have there been any real attacks averted with the use of one of these?

Absolutely.

But when this is addressed, the backlash is almost intolerable. I am reminded of the Charlize Theron campaign "Real men don''t rape". I think it lasted all of 5 minutes before someone decided that Charlize''s newly acquired American accent rendered her incapable of commenting on the rape crisis in South Africa...

This is no solution.

I shudder to think what a demented moron who would rape a woman or his friends would do to her, if she had this on, there is a lot of vile things that can be done to a woman, and rape doesnt have to be on that list. With the perpetrator enraged, ego hurt and in pain, the woman would most likely be in a lot of trouble.

Education, punishment by the law and more education are the more realistic solutions.

That said: some of the flaws in it have already been articulated here, and the others are uglier. This won''t do a thing against gang rape, it might inspire increased brutality either in "revenge" (a bizarre concept when the starting point is defense against rape), or before the fact with objects used to check for the device. The fact that we have to worry about these things, ANY of these things, really makes me want to cry.

My first thought is, it would be better to just distribute firearms; my second, they''d just be used against us, too. We''re sort of screwed until we come to the point of cybernetic engineering that will allow for literal gun-arms, I think.

Well, I"m not sure - historically - that there has ever been such an incredible wholesale breakdown of the relation between the two halves of humanity. It is insane in the truest sense of insane. When I read stuff like this - and I know it is irrational and unfair - I HATE men. I want to drag out my Mary Daly to take a deep draft of the embodiment of female rage that she was, and then go kill a few of these guys. I think the firearms isn''t such a bad idea actually. They have long been used to level the differences in brute strength. They have children using them effectively, why not women? A scared woman is a far deadlier shot than any man, and that bit was from a homicide cop I once knew. All it takes is some rage and the desire to protect oneself or one''s children.

I wish we could just remove every woman from there and leave those men to rape and kiil each other....

Cool. I really hope that this will cause rapists to think twice once they know that these have been widely distributed. So sad that women have to worry about such things, but at least they can be proactive about it.

Those were my concerns as well.

I think you have the right idea with firearms. They aren''t difficult to use and with proper training would do a lot of good. (Proper training should include basic safety, a bit of training to get reasonably accurate aim, and weapon retention techniques.)

Rape and other crimes are as common as they are because nothing happens. If even 1/2 of all women (for that matter 1/3) were armed these creeps wouldn''t dare attempt this anymore. If there was a 1/2 chance the guy would wind up dead (or at least seriously injured) he''d entertain himself other ways. (and the ones who didn''t get the hint wouldn''t be alive long enough to do it a 2nd time)

Honestly, this is too serious an issue for T-shirt slogans. Do you think roving bands of armed men who rape, mutilate, and murder at will and repeatedly are going to be swayed by a slogan? Get real. There is virtually no enforcement of any laws here. These are men who left their humanity behind long ago, and are now on the level of animals. The sad reality is that guns ARE dangerous, and the only thing that will work against the advantage that these weapons give, is to either A)remove all the guns, which is not going to happen, or B)arm and train the women to level the field. If a band of men with greater physical strength than me, and better weapons than me, is coming at me, I don''t want a slogan, or a T-shirt, or to have a paltry "weapon" that requires me to let him lay hands on me, I want the ability to TAKE THEM OUT before they reach me. Period.

the problem has been going on for years: its economic in basis with the attackers killing those they do not steal to rape and/or torture. the object is to get the villagers to move of their own land. rape is a great tool of the ages for enforcing power. if we really want to end the problem, arm the villagers to the teeth. until the attackers meet resistance, they will continue. it is not enough to just arm the women: the whole village must be armed and trained.

The criminals will continue to use weapons even if you make them illegal (they are criminals after all...). Arm AND TRAIN the rest of society and they will lose their advantage.

From what I''ve heard about them, and the pain they''re meant to cause, unless he''s high as a kite on something killing all physical sensation, the man is completely unable to even walk while the device is still attached.

I think it''s a brilliant idea. While it''s horrid that something like this would even be NECESSARY to market in this day and age, I hope that it will at least give women a sense of control and power (as many women unfortunately don''t hold on to that)... not only the fact that they have a physical deterrent stashed in their vagina, but that they *can* indeed protect themselves.

They''re pushing it during the World Cup simply because of the high incidence of rape in Africa as a whole. ((For example... in some areas, it is believed that by raping a virgin, one can cure himself of AIDS, which has become so horribly prevalent a disease in the area))

I think that not only could one of the guys friends then rape her with a vengance, but what about her health. No woman goes places that she knows she is going to be raped in. That means that she would have to wear one of these condoms whenever she is out of her own home. That cant be good for our bodies. Or what if she is on her period. Every 2 minutes an attempted/completed rape takes place. This IS a problem but agree it seems unrealistic that women would just wear this all the time. It is an interesting concept.

I thought this was a preventative measure against the rowdiness and possible violence created by the games of the World Cup. I didn''t read the link. sorry. I would not agree to arming everyone. In some of those countries its OK for a man to rape his wife. It used be OK here as well Not very long ago. . Change happens . We hope news laws are instituted and education changes things. When you have civil wars , or tribal wars going its hard to make sense of anything that goes on in these places. But more guns rarely helps.

You are Warrior Women. I mean those women of yore somewhere in Mongolia, I think. I think they were called Amazon Women.

The thought of wearing one of these condoms makes me ill. For the condom to work, the man is already raping you. I don''t want that gross thing in my body, get raped and hope that I can get away before the bastard shoots or otherwise harms me. If he is with his friends, I''m already dead. We also know that women who are armed often have their weapon turned against them. If women are successful in shooting their would be rapist, can you imagine how the case would be presented in court? It would be a nightmare! Think of the battered women who have gone to prison for protecting themselves. I don''t have an answer. I wish that I did. I have worked with battered and abused women for most of my career as a therapist. I still want to know how we make substantive changes in our society that make the crime of rape unacceptable.
