Hi everyone,
I am posting the specs on my new earrings, have not been able to get good digital photos, will have to try outdoor photos or something for more light...
These were the loose diamonds that got lost being fedex''d from Blue nile in Oct (see archives). Well funny thing is, when the jeweler sent them back after being set, my husband placed a mail hold - so he could pick them up at the P.O. But, these earrings seem to obey no rules, the earrings were delivered anyway to our address by mistake! But they arrived safely---WHEW.
I''ve been reading the provocative thread about cut being the least important factor, I have to put in my 2 cents here, that cut made a huge difference for us. My husband first bought F, VS1 GIA certed diamond studs that were beautiful but I wanted more sparkle. So I returned them, and hunted for AGSL certed diamonds where I could check the numbers online (You can view the certs on Blue Nile without buying the stones, I could have gotten at least some Sarins on their GIA stones but it was easier to look at AGSL certs). I found the pair listed below (H, VS2, "signature cut") for about $626 less, then had them send me the diamonds loose (the screwback posts were killing me), so saved an additional $200 without the setting. They are also a teeny bit larger (.02 ct more ea stone). I guess I blew the savings on the custom platinum settings but they are much more comfortable with the Poussette backs and more unique. The setting is 3 prong tulip like (not basket), and set lower. There is no droop or tilt downwards like the original basket setting either.
Anyway--My husband first thought I was crazy for returning diamonds for lesser color and clarity, and paying for cut, but now he''s totally convinced that cut is more important. The diamonds just shine, sparkle, and beam so much more than the first pair. They also look bigger, and they look very white. When they were loose I could see the color next to my e-ring that is an E, but once set, and especially when they are worn, they look very white.
Thanks for all of your expert help. I can''t wait for my next diamond purchase, though its many years off. I would go again for a H color and VS2 or else SI1 if it was eye clean. I also would have the confidence this time to purchase from a smaller vendor for possibly a better price.
Aside from my FedEx fiasco, Blue Nile was very easy to shop from with their search engine, but I would warn all to double check the specs even if its a Signature cut, I found some duds in that collection too.
