Finally decided on my permanent setting. Who to use in NY?

Well I'm finally going to reset my diamond from its temporary setting to a new setting. I have agonized for 2 years. I have a huge folder of so many different ideas but still keep coming back to the 3 stone with pears sides. Miaranda's ring finally gave me the push to just do it.Thanks Miranda!!!!

I will be in NY next week really just for a day where I can check out a few people who would be able to make a beautiful setting for my stone.

I called and spoke with Yekutiel
I put out a quote request to Steve Kirsh
Should I bother with Leon Mege? I love his setting but people have said he can be difficult to work with.

My center stone is G Vs2 3.31 ct
I like chubby pears for the sides
not sure if I want double or single prong. Thoughts?

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!! I have never been to the diamond district before. Going up for family health matters to Sloan Kettering but have Monday April 13th free to check out the jewelers. Thanks!

bbziggy -

Despite his reputation foe being difficult, Leon Mege is the go-to guy for this style, in my opinion. He integrates the shank most smoothly into the head, he gets the right level of tilt on his side stones so they wrap around your finger most flatteringly, and the point settings on his pears are beautiful. I spoke to SK re doing this kind of setting, and he said that - altho he could do it - the design, where the shank seamlessly becomes the v-prongs for the points of the pears - is leon's original design. Ergo, I would go with Leon, as i think he does it best and most successfully. And he is VERY big about making sure this style wraps around your finger in the most aesthetically pleasing manner.

All that to say - I think you would get the best result with him - and one significantly better than a lot of other jeweler's version of this ring.

Good luck!

Wow, that's a lucky find! Only thing I noticed is your stone measures a tad bigger than the one that was in the setting - yours is 9.72x9.76. I would think your stone would fit but just wanted to point it out. Your ring size is also a little smaller, but I think it could be sized but again you might want to make sure.

Thanks diamondseeker, mrs-blop, and junebug17.

I actually saw this when diamondnut put hers up for sale. I called and spoke to Perry at Leon's . He was familiar with her setting and said my stone was a hair to big and also sizing could be a problem. Also her side stones are H color , not that I would be able to tell 1 color grade difference. I would prefer G though. I should ask again . Do you think Leon would set it for me if it would work?

Re: Finally decided on my permanent setting. Who to use in N

Sorry I should have posted the measurements of my stone.

3.31 G 3X VS2
9.72 x 9.76 x 5.8mm
my ring size is about 5-5.25

Re: Finally decided on my permanent setting. Who to use in N

Not sure whether Leon would be willing to set it, but my jeweler has set stones up to a half mm larger in settings with previously smaller stones.

As for the G/H - I dont think you'd be able to tell the difference. I would personally be happy with that degree of difference in any ring I was going to do. I say this through experience, as I have an unset G colored stone I want to set in the same Leon 3 stone setting (which is how I know SK's comments on it - because I asked him to set mine and came away deciding that it was better to go with Leon). For my own ring, I'd be happy with H colored sides. Although the difference in ring diameter is .2mm, the difference on each side is only .1mm, which in diamond terms, for example, is not even considered to be an eye visible difference. So I'd be very surprised if a ring couldn't have it's prongs each moved .1mm.

Your decision, of course, and you might prefer to have a new ring or to have Leon set your stone in the existing ring - which he might not be willing to do. But for me, I'd prefer to save the money.

Just my 2c. Good luck!

I'd get a second opinion on the stone fitting. The sizing should not be an issue because it is a very small difference. But it is very unlikely Leon would set your stone, because he'd much rather charge you $5k to make a new one.

I agree about G-H being fine. That is not unusual at all.

Agree wholeheartedly.

Thanks so much agin!
One more thing I forgot to mention is that I have a huge knuckle compared to my finger size. The balls don't really work and I am getting a callus on my ring finger from on and off even though my ring still has plenty of room to spin.
I have looked into the Fingermate shank which isn't the prettiest but it would solve my problem. I actually just got off of the phone with Leon and he was super friendly and nice. He said he has done many rings with that shank. It looks like I will have to go custom with a ring made for me which will be more costly but will at least be a perfect fit for me without the constant spin and pull over my knuckle.
I have an appointment with him on the 13th. I'll let you know how it goes and if I decide to use him. I do think he has beautiful settings and his prongs look amazing.

+1. Completely agree to get a 2nd opinion.

Those shanks can be put on any ring, so that would not rule out the setting that is for sale.

If your heart is still stuck on getting on a new setting made, I would go with Brilliantly Engaged.
They made my Platinum Setting and they do great work with reasonable prices.
Good Luck!

I'm so glad I saw this! And I'm SO glad you're considering IDJ for this setting! I think they nailed it. Have you been to Tiffany or Harry Winston to try this setting on? The setting IDJ does is a bit of both. The open-ness of Tiffany with the finesse of HW. I opted for the HW double prongs and love them. They are as nice as any I've seen. If I had your mega stone I would slap some doubles on that sucker in a heartbeat!

I got a quote from SK too..I felt like it was a bit high. I didn't get one from Leon though. I also checked many local B and M which were (no surprise) insanely high...AND with blobby prongs! :naughty:

My hubby ultimately ordered this from Yekutiel since he's comfortable with him, he's always nice (DH has NO patience for a diva - neither do I for that matter), the quality is always excellent, he's responsive and the price is always fantastic!

Good luck! I'm so excited for you!

Re: Finally decided on my permanent setting. Who to use in N

Thanks for all of the great ideas and good advice!
I know you want to help me with a huge savings of money and I really do appreciate that!!
I will still meet with some of the jewelers in NY. I'm thinking that since my finger base is so slim that the pears might need to be angled more so that they don't hit my pinkie and middle finger. As much as I would love to buy the setting from Diamondnut and be done and have a real savings, my DH still thinks I might be better off starting the process from scratch to be sure to get a special setting that fits me perfect. Since I have waited two years, I will still check out NY and decide from there. I really don't know of any good jeweler here in Miami to modify Diamondnut's setting. I didn't even ask Leon knowing he probably has little interest in resetting and sizing one of his settings for someone else.

Miranda I do love your ring! Yekutiel was also super nice on the phone.

Thanks Madison2. Love your setting too!

And thanks again to Diamondseeker2006, emmebee,mrs_blop, for letting me know that the preloved setting could probably work. I haven't ruled it out yet. So all the advice you have given is great and I will keep you informed on what I plan to do after I get back from NY.
