Congratulations on getting such a nice looking cab ! I just love high domed cabs, I think that it''s because you can see through the sides a bit giving them a different look from every angle. You could ask the seller about the color, often aquas have a greenish cast which the camera doesn''t pick up for some reason. As for durability, these high domed cabs are extremely durable. You might get some scratching on the upper surfaces,(which is easily polished out while in the setting if need be), but breaking one is nearly impossible. Having the color wash out in sunlight may happen, but it looks like the fine and well distributed internal ''foggy'' inclusions will make this stone glow. Please do take pictures when you get this if possible !
Is it going to be lighter than it looks because of this though? I know you can''t possibly *know* for sure, but just your experience... a little lighter or greener or bluer or darker would all be fine. If it comes out looking like a bright topaz or colorless...Date: 5/7/2010 11:58:45 AM

That gray background is ideal for showing color correctly as it allows a person to manipulate the color of picture easily without making it obvious on the background. You have to choose something for a background and this is good because it doesn''t add any colors to the stone which aren''t there and it doesn''t mess around too much with the camera''s light meter and cause a washed out or off color picture like a white background can.
Can''t agree more. I do not even understand what "cornflower" means - we have a lot of cornflowers in Russia, but they come in all shades, even if you gather them from the same field. They may be very light-blue, violet-blue, medium-blue. In general, I still have no idea what "cornflower" sapphire means.Date: 5/6/2010 4:13:38 PM

I agree Chrono. No offense Michael, but I personally am not the type of person that cares for the romanticizing of colors in gems, afterall, what the heck color is ''pigeon''s blood???''Since I never saw a pigeon''s blood, do I have to guess?![]()
When describing color to a vendor, use the hue (ex: slightly bluish green), tone (light, medium light, medium, medium dark, dark) and saturation (slightly greyish/brownish, moderately strong, strong, vivid etc. . . . ). A good colored gem vendor will understand what you''re talking about and try to provide a more accurate stone according to your requirements.
Seafoam color? We once had a thread on that, and no one is still sure what exactly ''seafoam'' means, and it can mean a lot of different colors to many different people. Okay, I''m off my soapbox now.

This is the tourmaline I received from Gene not quite a month ago. Do you call this seafoam?
I would call that medium light slightly bluish green with moderately strong saturation.![]()
I would also call it beautiful!![]()
Well it is in Thailand right now so no pics for awhile. I tried taking photos of the loose stone before I sent it off, but they were some of the worst gemstone pics I have ever taken so I gave up!Date: 5/7/2010 5:17:29 AM

Here''s a piece of medium toned slightly bluish green rough with strong saturation, and it''s not as pale as the other examples way above, and yet some people would call this seafoam too.
TL - That is beautiful! It''s glowing... Is it your rough?![]()
Cind - Can I see more pics of your beautiful tourmaline, please!
Just for my own interest - what kind of setting have you chosen? Is it a lotus, or something else?Date: 5/7/2010 1:11:06 PM

No it isn''t a lotus. It is a bezel. It''s like Katebar"s setting which was based off Freefly''s setting. I really love this setting.Date: 5/7/2010 1:15:33 PM

I WISH it were my rough, but that what I would wish for if I was looking for seafoam green, or whatever you want to call it. LOL!Date: 5/7/2010 5:17:29 AM

Cehra - Looks like a great cab. It is nearly the same size as an Oregon Sunstone cab that I purchased recently. I had it set as a ring in a thin 18k gold bezel and silver backing. It is a great size for a ring and I really enjoy wearing it.Date: 5/7/2010 11:53:34 AM

I''m so excited!! lol It''s almost midnight here in china... I don''t know if I''m going to be able to sleep - but at least my ''counting sheep'' variation (which is usually imagining my diamond reset) is going to be new tonight!!! lol
What I know I want in a setting is a silver bezel (white gold maybe - unplated) that is like thick round wire to play off the roundness of the stone... and I am thinking of having it set e/w, maybe with a diamond, probably not. I thought a diamond halo would be nice when I was thinking of a clear faceted stone, but I''m much happier with how this is working out and I want the simmplicity and more casualness of a plain bezel - so probably won''t add a diamond (was thinking like 1/4 carat or something).
i''m so flipping excited I wish I could swear here lol My birthday is this month and I''m turning 40 and was planning to get an emerald... this is kinda closeI''m going to come in WAY under budget - I told him to add it to my diamond reset and eternity band budget haha
But who can think about those...

that''s a really pretty color! I was thinking of having it set at an off angle with a diamond or something when it was still faceted (in my mind) but with the cab I''m probably not going to do that.
I went through your topics and didn''t see a thread on this stone - do you have any finished pictures of it on your hand? I am excited to see that!

I think this shape of cab looks great as a simple ring. The band is silver to hold the price down. The backing is pure silver which isn''t supposed to tarnish. I wear the ring this direction because the shiller is directional and is slightly prettier to me on this side.
The stone is 3.41 ct and 9 x 12 mm. Janishjewels on etsy did the setting. She does lovely E-W settings as well. I''ll link you to an aqua one. LinkDate: 5/7/2010 9:47:36 PM

wow - often I prefer the look of gemstones unset because, well I have no explanation lol I like them set but... anyway - that stone just blossoms in that setting - please post more pics! Who did that setting? It''s very close to what I am hoping for... but I am very much leaning toward an e/w orientation... What size ring is that? Stone dimensions? haha - you''re feeding my lust right now![]()
