Well, I think I’m ready.
I’ve had this ring over 30 years and since acquiring the Almond Blossom ring (and promising DH at the time I’d sell this one) I’ve not worn her.
She is HUGE approx 25mm long and 20mm wide, ovalish shape, and about 5mm thick. Thats around 13 carats. She is Crystal opal with 90% colourplay across, rolling flash pattern. Lots of red! She is set in 18k yellow gold and the ring weighs 17.7 grams.
She is however not perfect. She was an inheritance from an Aunt who had the ring made in the 1960s. She is set in a fully enclosed bezel setting because she has potch lines. These lines are stable, not changing in the 30 years I’ve owned her but nevertheless the decision was made decades ago to be extra sure. When I get power back (dont ask, try getting an electrician over Christmas/ New Year ?? Oh look, there’s a purple unicorn with wings !)
I’m going to check under the microscope, I don’t believe the reach the surface but I need to check for a prospective buyer.
Price? This is tricky. While the gold melt value is around $1,000 (AUD) what price the opal. Over 10 carats price per carat is around $1,500 a carat but how much less with stone lines, maybe crazing? 20% of value? That’s about $4,000 (AUD).
Here are some photos to see if anyone is tempted....
