I have been shopping for an engagement ring for a couple months now and have an opportunity to purchase an engagement ring from a friend. I am really only purchasing it for the stone, as I will have it reset. The setting is a plat 4 prong setting.

The GIA GTL lists it as:
Square Brilliant
weight: 1.32
depth: 74.8%
table: 70%
girdle: med to slightly thick
cutlet: none
Polish: VG
Sym: G
Clarity: VS1
Color: F
Flour: m.blue

Meas: 6.17x5.91x4.42

Any opinions on a fair offer I should give?

FYI the owner is asking 5K for the ring

Thanks yall, I really do appreciate any help or guidance!

Hi Slush, if this stone is a round brilliant we need the pavilion and crown angles; I think you could do better though the depth and crown do not sound good. I like to stay within VG to Ex for polish and Symmetry also.

It's a princess cut (square brilliant)

From what I have seen on the princess cut it's table is pretty good. I agree on the sym and polish, though.

Hmm... not too much I can say about it. I know nothing about square cuts. What I would say is do a quick online search for similar loose stones to see how much you're saving/over paying.

Skippy, I almost made the same mistake. My first thought was: "Damn... 70% table and 74% depth!?"

I think it''s going to be difficult to make any assessment with only the information you''ve supplied. For one it''s not square. Is the cut graded? If you are serious you may want to get an appraisal done.

I figured it would be tough to give an opinion on the stone. I am taking it in for an appraisal, but my jeweler has been out of town.

Thanks yall!
