I have several arched doorways in my house that I am considering stenciling some inspiration quotes over. The door ways are about 4 feet wide and I would want the letters to be minimum 4" high so they can be read. I''m looking for short, inspirational quotes that would be good for my kids to view and take to heart. Possible topics: doing your best, be creative, think outside the box, work hard, enjoy life etc. I''m thinking I can get about 7 words max. I''m willing to go down the walls a bit if necessary. Any ideas?

On an entirely different note here is one of my favorite quotes but it''s too long:

“The uncreative mind can spot wrong answers, but it takes a very creative mind to spot wrong questions”
Antony Jay quotes (British writer and journalist, b.1930)

I think that''s a great idea! I''ve always wanted a quote wall when we get a house. This one might be too long, but I think it''s good for teaching kids to have conviction: "You''ve got to stand for something or you''ll fall for anything"

There tons of websites for inspirations quotes. Here are some short quotes I found for you...

"Inches make champions." —Vince Lombardi

"No great thing is created suddenly." —Epictetus (A.D.200)

"A goal without a plan is just a wish." - Antoine de Saint-Exupery

If you guys want some quotes for walls, head on over to www.wallwords.com. It is a company that makes words to stick on your wall. They are kind of like vinyl stickers and can be removed or repositioned. They have a ton of quotes, large and small. Order a catalog!

My mom got the catalog and LOVED everything. She wanted something for the kitchen area and ended up going with a syaing in French. "Mangez la glace et courez tout nu" = EAT ICE CREAM AND RUN NAKED.

I have always wanted to do this. Someday when I actually own a place! That website was way cool Equ!!

A word of kindness is seldom spoken in vain, while witty sayings are as easily lost as the pearls slipping from a broken string. - George Dennison

Ideas are like pizza dough, made to be tossed around. - Anna Quindlen.

i got a bunch saved up from those little teacher books you get...lol...i like those...well out of a page i looked at those were the shortest that''s for sure...but i didn''t put to much time into looking.

i love this idea! my aunt had hardwood steps that had plaster on the part you don''t step on and see when facing the stairs. they led up to her kids bedrooms so she painted the "now i lay me down to sleep" prayer down them. it was so charming! one of the most unique things i have ever seen in any home.

i like the quote, "If you are not too long, I will wait here for you all my life." -- Oscar Wilde

also, "“If every word I said could make you laugh, I''d talk forever...” -- Dennis Wilson

thanks for the ideas!

Equestrienne--thanks for the link. I had no idea Wallwords existed. I''ll be ordering the catalog today.

Tdiddy--the idea for the stairs is great too. I was just thinking about the risers on my stairs...they are needing repainted and I''ve been wanting to do something different. I toyed with tiling them but this would be more fun.

I have always liked: "It''s nice to be important, but it''s more important to be nice".

Don''t ever wrestle with a pig, because you''ll both get dirty, but the pig will enjoy it. - Charlie Munger

random addition here but recently we saw a picture of a room in a house i think online, where the wall was done in a dark kind of reddish brown paint. then on top of it in a light golden champagn color, a page from a book was stenciled out in lines of words. it was REALLY cool. it looked perfect for an office, which i think was the kind of room it was in. also in a more feminine room it could be done in script vs the block lettering (this was a nice block lettering so it looked old fashioned yet classy). so just another thought for home decor re: walls and stenciling...maybe for one of your kids rooms or something. it was just one wall, the ''focus'' wall right behind the desk and cabinet....super cute.

Oh how fun! I wanted to stencil some food-related phrases around my kitchen when I first moved into my apartment, and two years later still haven't gotten around to it...

I like: "Live well, laugh often, love much" for a wall... concise, but still says a lot!

A few more short ones:

"The best way out is always through."
Robert Frost

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams."
Henry David Thoreau

"Where there is love there is life."
Mohandas K. Gandhi

"May you live all the days of your life."
Jonathan Swift

"A loving heart is the truest wisdom."
Charles Dickens

"No dreamer is ever too small; no dream is ever too big."
Anonymous

"Nothing can bring you peace but yourself."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Imagination is more important than knowledge."
Albert Einstein

On the main arch of the Virginia Military Institute barracks is inscribed "You may be whatever you resolve to be" (Stonewall Jackson) -- that hits doing your best and working hard.
