Fat Fingers

My girlfriend has large fingers (ring size 10 1/2) and her hands are ''in her words'' "boyish". She really likes the Tiffany-style solitaire rings, as well as this one Mark Morrell ring with a solitaire diamond and 4 diamonds on eash side like a channel setting (you know the ring I''m talking about...it''s beautiful).

With fingers this large, I''m wondering if these rings look odd on such a large finger. Does thickening the band or having a larger center diamond help make the ring suit the hand better. Whenever she''s been looking at rings, she can''t really try anything on (they don''t fit), so I''m looking for some of your advice.

A larger diamond will look better than a smaller one on hands that are that size. The width of the band is really a personal choice IMHO.

My mom wears the same ring size. I second the larger diamond & if your gf likes halo designs... even better! There''s more finger to be covered and something too small might not balance the hand. As far as band width - a medium to slightly wide band might be best but on my mom either super-thin or super-wide bands make the fingers too sausagey. Also, in our opinion a lower-set stone(closer to the finger...for instance, a low basket setting) is better than something too high(stilty prongs teetering above the hand).

I would recommend definitely going with a larger diamond, at least 1 carat, if not more. To save some cash, perhaps go with a slightly wider plain band (gold, wg, platinum is really up to you and her) and have a nice big solitaire on top! If she really wants it flashy, maybe try some smaller melee diamonds and pave on the band, and still go for the big center stone to support her finger size and really give it a "boom" ! These are my recommendations, but of course this is entirely up to you! Let us know what you are thinking on doing!

Bless her heart I imagine that must be quite frustrating for both of you. My best friend wears a size eleven and she deals with the same thing. I would HIGHLY recomend doing a comfort fit for whatever styel ring you get becuase it cuts down on the "sausage finger" look and keeps the rings from looking tight. How long are her fingers? If she has average length fingers a wider band might make them look shorter esp once the wedding band is there as well. The tiffany style solitaire (at least the one from Tiffany&Co) is 2.5mm with a wedding band that would likley fill her space nicely. I am with the others in suggested a lower setting. While I think you ought to get her what you can afford to interms of size a bigger stone will likely look better on her hand. This may sound crazy but perhaps you could take her into The Icing or something like that and get her to try on some fakey rings, not for style but for how wide they are so she can see them. I have very large mand hands as well, although I'm not brave enough to mention my size...it's only as big a deal as you make it.

From personal experience, it does not need to be low or comfort fit although comfort fit it good for all hands but I suppose if there is a little more meat on the finger it doesn't hurt...

In fact, I like it high...helps to make the stone look bigger on large hand

I think a thicker band helps to make the diamond look smaller...and the diamond looks smaller on a large hand to begin with....

My three stone cam out with a thicker band and is lower than I thought it would be. I'm much prefer thin and high....and it's not comfort fit and it's very comfortable! Don't listen to these size 6 gals

I would get a thin b/c it helps to make the diamond look bigger...

You''re right. The proportions recommended prior would *seem* to work when it''s just the opposite. But, this advice is coming from a size 5 gal.

Halo or illusion setting could be a benefit if not too delicate.

Thanks for the opinions so far...they''re proving to be very helpful. I find that ruling out many designs is more helpful than selecting a bunch that you do like. It looks like I have some more work to do, because some of you mention settings that I''ve never heard of before (i.e. illusion setting).

I''m still not totally sold on a princess stone or round...I like the princess look, but I''m affraid that 1) if may be a passing fad, and 2) very few settings I find complement a princess stone. I really like the sparkle of a round and love the settings for many more rounds.

In terms of a budget, $20k is roughly what I have in mind. And anything larger than say 1.5 carats is not really our fancy. I''m thinking between 1.0 and 1.2 carats personally.

I''m realistically not looking to buy my ring until either October or May (for a Christmas or early August 2006 proposal). So I''ll be hanging around for at least the next year or so...probably even after that too though.

I''m just building my budget and doing my research along the way...thanks for everyone''s help though...now and in the future.

Good thinking, these things take time and now you will be able to find what is perfect for you and your lady. Just out of curiosity does she have any idea of what she wants? You may want to ask her to show you somethings that she loves, and a few that she loathes. You may also want to ask her about the wedding band, does she want it to sit flush with her e-ring? Will she wear the e-ring and wedding band on seperate hands? And those types of questions.

Maybe the Vatche X-prong, or my favorite, the Whiteflash W-prong (shown here) would be good options. Price is also good allowing for most of the budget to be spent on a very blingy stone!

Just my 2 cents, I have the same size fingers as your girlfriend and am quite tall with large hands. I have a tiffany style 1 carat solitaire and it looks fine on my hand and very classic. I recently was lucky enough to get another diamond

a 2 carat pear - again I chose a thin band because I find they make the stone pop. I can''t try anything on either when ring shopping as they only normally carry size 6 or 7

, but I am sure the Tiffany style would be fine on her if that is what she loves. I definitely agree with the other posts that a larger diamond would look best, but it of course depends on budget and the one who wears it!! Good luck with your ring selection and tell your GF there are other large fingered gals who proudly sport Tif settings!! Also welcome
