This is probably really silly, but I need to ask!

Does there come a time when you can't wear to-the-body tank tops any more?

I've always had a small waist and flat stomach...but in the last 2-3 years that I've gotten older and gained a little weight I have developed a layer of fat in this area. It's not so much rolls it's more like a guitar with a bump before my thighs start. So now whenever I try anything that is REMOTELY close to the body the shape that comes out isn't smooth...it's not that the size is too tight...if I try to go a size up it's too big on the top, or too long, or just doesn't look right.

Does this mean I can't wear close-fitting tank tops any more? :(sad

Are you wearing a properly fitted bra? Giving you a well support bosom will raise it higher, giving you a longer torso.

Maybe you should look closer into some slimming underwear. Something from spanx in order to let things to lie a little flatter. I don't think you should give up yet!

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

Yimmers - yes, the bra is fine...

heraanderson - that might be a good idea for special occasions, I might just have to do that. But I wouldn't want to have to do that every day...it might be good for me to look into it to have them on hand - I've heard mixed reviews about Spanx, though - anybody recommend any particular one?

I know if I lost the 15 or so pounds I put on in the last year it would get better, and I'm trying, but it's taking a long time of course.

I just can't judge whether it looks terrible, or I'm being too hard on myself and expecting them to look like when I was 25 and it's just an "acceptance" thing.

Honestly, if you don't have a super flat stomach, a tight tank top isn't going to be as flattering as a slightly less fitted one will be. Try tank tops with a different cut, not just tight tank tops in larger sizes. You can get a slim tank that isn't skin tight in your size-you just have to look.

not just tight tank tops in larger sizes.

Thing,

For some reason this made me laugh...it made me realize I'm trying to squeeze a round peg into a square hole. haha

I guess acceptance for me means I need to stop wearing tight tops! Not so much for my stomach (it's still fairly flat) but for the sides...the "outline" of my body shape...

Oh well.

Heh, I think sometimes we get stuck in our "uniform" and it's hard to deviate. I actually think slightly looser fitting clothes are more flattering no matter what.

ETA for grammar!

Yes, you're right I'm so used to wearing tank tops all my life because my upper body *used* to be so toned and fit...

Not any more...

Even with a lot of work I still have a layer of fat all over... ;(

I don't like tight clothes either...but I think you're right - I don't have to go to the OTHER extreme of tops that are a-line...there might some materials that are thicker that don't show everything through as much.

Thanks!
