Hi , long time price-scope stalker here!
I've been offered a very good price (on a trade up) on a GIA Fancy Brownish Yellow Cushion Cut, just over one carat in weight.
The thing is, i looked online and brownish yellow looks very brown in comparison to FY in photos , but at the jewelers it did not look brown at all? Only a little 'light blonde' if that makes sense, than the other FY and FIY diamonds on show.
I'm wondering how this colour grade varies , like if GIA will grade it Brownish Yellow rather than simply FY if it shows the slightest bit of brown? And how does it affect the value of the diamond?
The cut+ clarity etc are all great with this stone, its just the color issue which bothers me.

Wondering if anyone could offer some advice?

Thank you so much in advance!

Grading is always a range, and I've included a few below that are 'fancy brownish yellow' but dont look SUPER brown.

There is also fancy light brownish yellow, which will show less brown.

You can look and do some comparisons on leibish also. Did you look at it in all types of lighting conditions?

What is this an upgrade from?

HI Ishfan,
Yes, the color grade of Fancy Brownish yellow varies widely.
I've seen some stones with this grade that look almost exactly like a Fancy Yellow, and others that show a tremendous amount of brown.
For this reason prices can also vary widely.

As with any FCD, the setting has a huge impact on the way the stone looks

Hi everyone, thanks for your replies!

This is the most close colour to the one i viewed...but at the time under the indoor lighting it did not look brown at all. Quite worried about the GIA difference between FBY and FY, so may inquire about the price difference between the two in store tomorrow.

I'm planning on getting it set in a three stone setting with the yellow basket (no cup), such as this style (The stone is not from DBL, this is just for reference as it shows clear photos) http://www.diamondsbylauren.com/index.php/jewelry/yellow-diamond-ring-106ct-fancy-light-yellow-si1-three-stone-diamond-ring-gia-r892

I hope this setting enhances the yellow and it wont look too brown!

Oh, and this is an upgrade from a non fancy yellow 1 carat princess cut which was around the U-V range or W-X, it never had a GIA certificate as it came from a reputable jewelers in the UK, however they graded it as 'natural yellow'. I know princess cuts do not hold color as much as cushions but this stone was definitely not within fancy color range.

Have you compared the cushion cut mm to your princess mm size?

Its roughly the same- despite there being a 0.16 carat difference. I'm really after the yellow colour though rather than size, which is why i'm so fussy about the 'brownish' element

Re: Fancy Brownish Yellow Diamond help, is it such a good id

All the GIA graded FBY do have a distinct brownish tint to them. At least all the ones I've seen. I don't care for the tint and originally I didn't like yellow either but it's grown on me in certain settings and cuts.

Fancy brownish yellow is not as good as fancy yellow from a value standpoint. But it is much better than yellowish brown or even yellow brown.

But from an aesthetics standpoint, if you like the way it looks a little bit of brown gives it a deeper tone. Makes it look more "fancy" in a sense.

Be sure to check it out in as many typical lighting environments as you can before you decide if it is the stone for you.

Got it...wasnt sure what the "update" meant.

Forget about picture/video comparison with other stones online. I don't like brownish yellow but perhaps you do. Colour preference is very personal. It will have a noticeable brown tint otherwise GIA will not grade it as brownish yellow. Have you viewed the diamond under different types of lighting? Have you compared it to other Fancy Yellow in person?

Follow the above advise, and if YOU like it, trust your opinion. I like yellow/brown diamonds.

Hi everyone, thanks for the advice!
I looked at the diamond again in natural light outside, and compared it to both a FY and FLY. The FBY looks almost identical to the FLY but with alittle more saturation, maybe 'golden yellow' but not really noticeable brown like online photos at all! This VS1 diamond is a great deal and it has such 'fire' to it, with no florescence. Will post photos when it is done!
