Faint, Medium, Strong or Very Strong Flouresence

Hi everyone!!

I'm new to Pricescope (I've been a lurker for awhile) and have a question about blue flouresence. My boyfriend and I are looking to get engaged within the next few months and we are looking at getting a 1.75 - 2ct J SI1 H&A round diamond. My question is what level of flouresence (blue) should we look to get to enhance the whiteness of the diamond, Faint, Medium, Strong, or Very Strong Flouresence? I know that if the flouresence is too strong it can make the diamond appear milky or oily. What I would like to know is what is the typical level of flouresence that people usually get when buying a J color diamond (that will make the diamond appear whiter)??

Also, I know that the diamond will have a blue hue when in certain lighting. Is this going to be very noticable to myself and others around me? For example, when I'm at work in flouresent lighting will my diamond glow blue all day??

But there are varying methods to determine what level of fluorescence a diamond can have so it might be a case by case basis, I wouldn't necessarily rule anything out.

I don't think it would be too noticeable, there are some threads on the forum with pictures of blue fluo diamonds in strong lighting and they just look lovely. Most people will not know it has the fluo if it is in a lower color grade as it will help the diamond look even whiter.

Ditto, if you hit Control F in this article and type in Fluorescence you will see where the appraisers say it seems to be rare in very strong flour.

To really see the effect you are going to have to go medium and up and even then in most lighting you will barely notice it. It''s a nice effect, but I don''t think it''s necessary for a J stone if you find a great one that doesn''t have it.

I have an N colored OEC with somewhere around strong blue fluoro, and honestly though it goes a neat steely blue in direct sunlight (rather than its usual hint-of-cream), so do all my other low colored OECs... they''re reflecting the sky. The only time I''ve been sure it''s the fluoro and not sky reflection is under blacklight! Fluorescent light doesn''t do anything in particular for my stone.

Fluorescent light do not emit large amount of UV, almost none. It is call Fluorescent light because while the excited mercury vapor in the tube is emitting UV, the coating of the tube is absorbing that UV rays'' energy and re-emitting that energy as white visible light, thus the term Fluorescent cause the coating of the tube is Fluorescent.

Not necessarily, even in very strong, negative effects are extremely rare, see this page for more info.

Medium to strong fluorescence is generally considered to have a beneficial effect on some lower colours, but don't disregard a well cut J should it not have any fluoro as KC says.

Agreed. I recently got an ering with a diamond that''s I in color with strong blue fluorenscence. If you look at my ring, you''ll see no oily or hazy look at all.

Medium to strong is what I think I''ve learned here. You won''t see it in regular office fluorescent lighting. Maybe in the sun (if you''re lucky) or under a blacklight.

This is my I colour with strong blue fluor (GIA). The first picture is under normal evening household electric light and as you can see it doesn''t look blue. The second picture is under electric light but shining a UV light onto the diamond. The last picture is taken in sunlight. It has a blue whiteness that is more apparent in the photo than in real life but it just looks sparkly and lovely! The fluor certainly masks any yellowness the stone has and it can hold it''s own next to a G colour in all honesty. I guess the only time it would ever look blue is if I were to go to a nightclub!!!

I recently upgraded my stone----1.8carat K color with medium blue fluorescence.

I used to have 1.3carat K color stone without fluor and I can tell you my new stone look a lot whiter!
